Men's Soccer Couldn't Capitalize on Early Goal

Box Score

Bangor, ME – Husson University falls to 0-3 on the season with a loss to Gordon College in the 2nd annual New Balance Challenge Cup.

The Eagles struck first with an early goal from Stephen Berenyi (Levant, ME), his second of the 2013 campaign, to put Husson up 1-0 in the fourth minute of play.

The Fighting Scots knotted the game at 1-1 in the ninth minute off the foot of Evan Crocker, the goal was unassisted. Caleb Cole gave the Scots a 2-1 lead in the 32nd minute with the assist from Andy Guthrie. Guthrie carried the ball up the right side and placed a perfect cross into the box that connected with the foot of Cole.

Gordon College added two more goals in the second half. Crocker registered his second goal of the contest in the 47th minute with Aaron Terjanian coming up with the assist. Torrey Stricklin notched his first goal of the 2013 season in the 75th minute on the Kellen Kasiguran assist.

"We played a good team tonight. We had scored first so I thought, 'you know good start for us', great goal. Then we give up kind of a bad goal, near post. I thought the guys would be able to fight back but Berenyi takes a bad injury which probably set our team off a little bit since he's such a good player for us. Although we fought back and created some chances with our restarts and other things, the game just got away from us. I thought they were a good team and that's why we're scheduling these teams to play good teams right now and getting ready for our league play."

Brian Potter (Waterville, ME) got the start for the Eagles in net, allowing three goals while saving five attempts. Steven Paquette (Ferrisburgh, VT) played in the final 29:27 of regulation, allowing one goal with two saves. Potter sees his record fall to 0-3 on the season.

Tim Hardy saw his record improve to 2-0 with the Scots win, allowing one goal with one save.

Husson, 0-3, returns to action tomorrow night at Boucher Field as they play the Huskies of Southern Maine at 7:30 PM. Gordon College will play at 5:00 PM at Boucher Field against Maine Maritime Academy.
