Eagles Lose Heartbreaker in Overtime

Box Score

Bangor, ME - Husson women's soccer fell to non-conference opponent Saint Joseph's College of Maine 1-0 in overtime Saturday afternoon. The game was the second match-up of the day during the 9th Annual Husson Classic, and Western New England University defeated Maine Maritime Academy 5-0 in the day's first game.

Both teams maintained an even pace for the first 97 minutes, swapping possessions and opportunities. Jess Poulin (Albion, ME) was strong in net for the Eagles, stopping 9 shots on the afternoon. Saint Joseph's goalie Jaci Lorenzen (Windham, ME) earned the win in net with just two stops.

The Eagles had what very well could have been their strongest scoring opportunity with seconds remaining in regulation when they created chaos in front of Lorenzen and multiple scoring opportunities.

Ashley Beaulieu (Durham, ME) scored the game winning goal with the assist coming from Lauren Titus (Arundel, ME). Beaulieu's ball struck the top cross bar and grazed the goal line on it's way down to escape with the victory for the Monks.

Husson head coach Carly Gettler said, "Despite the tough overtime loss, we saw a lot of bright spots on the field today. We showed that we're a team who can play some good soccer and that we can really fight, and we got to showcase some of our new talent out there. We're committed as a team to come out with the same energy and enthusiasm again tomorrow."

The Eagles fall to 0-1 on the season but return to Boucher Field tomorrow to face Western New England University in day 2 of the 9th Annual Husson Classic at 1:30 PM. Maine Maritime Academy will face St. Joseph's at 11 AM in the first Sunday match.
