Eagles Fall Short in Season Opener Against Lyons

Box Score

Norton, MA - Husson men's soccer fell to non-conference opponent Wheaton College 5-2, Friday afternoon. The game was the first of the 2013 season for both teams.

The Lyons struck first when Kevin Davis (Beacon, NY) connected with Noah Kossoff (New York, NY) for a goal at 13:43. A little over 7 minutes later the Eagles struck back on the foot of first year Jimmy Fitzpatrick (Houlton, ME) who netted a pass from Alain Tuyishime (Rwanda).

Michael Williams (Los Angelos, CA) and Michael Cronin (Wethersfield, CT) added back to back goals to break the tie and edge the Wheaton lead to 3-1 going into the half.

In the second half the Lyons continued their scoring with Adam Sholi (Sandwich, MA) and Kevin Gil (Pawtucket, RI) goals.

Husson's Fitzpatrick found the back of the net once more at 82:30 on a penalty kick to cut the lead to 5-2 but the 3 goal deficit was too much to overcome.

Eagles goalkeeper Brian Potter (Waterville, ME) made 12 saves in the loss, while Jackson Towle (South Berwick, ME) stopped 1 shot for the Lyons, and Matt Dickey (Newton, MA) grabbed the victory with 2 saves in his 77 minutes in net.

"We have undertaken a big task in playing the high level of teams we have on our schedule this season. Although we scored two goals, defensively we could not keep up with them and we let them create too many opportunities," said head coach Jeff Gettler, "I thought Potter was fantastic in net, but we did not keep enough pressure on the ball and the other team took advantage of it. I have to do a better job preparing the team for this level of play. These guys need to be resilient tomorrow and compete against an even tougher team in Babson. We will learn about the resiliency of the team and how they bounce back from this loss."

The Eagles fall to 0-1 and will travel to Babson tomorrow for a 2:00 PM game time.
