Men's Basketball Topples NEC on Senior Day

Box Score

Bangor, ME – Husson men's basketball used their entire squad to win a decisive North Atlantic Conference (NAC) game over New England College on Sunday afternoon, 106-78. The Eagles move to 15-7 (12-3 NAC) heading into the last week of regular season play, while the Pilgrims fall to 2-21 (2-14 NAC).

Husson celebrated senior day for its five seniors before the game, and Brooks Spaulding (Fairfield, ME), Eric Modica (Kittery, ME), Wes Murphy (Norwich, CT), Jon Klages (Freeport, ME), and Marc Zaharchuk (Richmond, ME) were all recognized for their career accomplishments with the Eagles. Fittingly, all five seniors put in huge contributions in the day's victory. Murphy (5 rebounds) scored a game-high 23 points in 23 minutes, hitting 7 of 13 from behind the arc. Klages (6 rebounds) and Modica (7 rebounds, 6 assists) each scored 14, Spaulding (8 rebounds, 1 assist) scored 13—including 4 dunks, and Zaharchuk (5 rebounds) put up 5 points.

The game started off a quick three from Murphy only 9 seconds in, and the Eagles were in the lead for the rest of the game. NEC played a tireless man-to-man defense, but Husson shot 55.2% on field goals, 50% on threes, and 68% on free throws to overcome the Pilgrims. Husson went into halftime with a  50-37 lead, and came out in the second half on fire. In a 15-2 run led by the Eagles' seniors, Murphy hit 3 three-pointers, Spaulding dunked one, and Modica and Zaharchuk put away jumpers to give the team a 65-39 lead. Murphy hit his fourth second half shot from behind the arc just 6 minutes into the half, and the Eagles continued to pull away throughout the rest of the half. Daniel Fleming (Fairfield, ME), Phil Leighton (Naples, ME), Donte Cottonham (Silver Spring, MD), Matt Dube (Kennebunk, ME), and Trevon Butler (Waterbury, CT) came in late to close out the game, and the Eagles won 106-78.

Joel DeMadet (Brooklyn, NY) was the high-scorer for NEC with 18 points, and Javon Williams (New Britain, CT), and Jeremiah Johnson (Huntsville, UT) also put up double figures in the points category. Jonathan Byrnes (Bethel, CT) grabbed a team-high 5 rebounds.

Husson will host top-seeded Maine-Farmington on Tuesday night at 5:30 PM, followed by the women's game at 7:30, in their last regular season home game. In support of breast cancer awareness, fans are encouraged to wear pink as part of the "Pink Zone" to receive Husson Eagles give-aways.
