Box Score Bangor, Maine – The Husson women's soccer team capped off a successful Homecoming weekend by getting their second shutout in as many days in a 3-0 conference victory over the visiting Johnson State Badgers. With the win, the Eagles improve to 5-6-1 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play. With the loss, the Badgers drop to 5-6 overall and 2-4 in conference action.
Michaela Bicknell (West Addison, Vermont) got the scoring started in the 15th minute of gameplay when she took a beautiful lead pass from Courtney Hill (Calais, Maine) down the right sideline and beat goalkeeper Amber McCullock near post to put the Eagles on the board 1-0.
Shortly after, in the 23rd minute, Becca Jones (Newmarket, New Hampshire) continued her impressive weekend by collecting her own rebound off her initial shot that hit the cross bar, and burying it to nab her second goal of the weekend and putting Husson up 2-0.
It looked as though Husson would head into the half with a comfortable 3-0 halftime lead when Lacey Kent-Webber (St. Albans, Maine) directed a header into the back of the net off of a perfect pass from Whitney Cross (Belfast, Maine) off of a corner. As pretty as the play was, the goal was disallowed for goalie interference, and the score would remain 2-0 heading into the break.
Even after making multiple substitutions to open the second half of play, the Eagles continued to show their dominance by tilting the field in their favor. The Eagles won the possession battle and controlled the ball well, while peppering McCullock with multiple shots in the process. Lona Sargent (Sullivan, Maine) had a few opportunities on the doorstep turned away by McCullock, and Mariah Carrier (Lewiston, Maine) and Desir'ee Hamler (Franklin, New Jersey) each had multiple shots just miss the mark.
The Eagles finally capitalized in the 80th minute when first year forward Shaunna Beaudoin (Brookton, Maine) netted her first career goal as a Husson Eagle to end the scoring at 3-0 and seal the win for Husson.
Jess Poulin (Albion, Maine) finished with four saves to earn her second shutout of the weekend for Husson. McCullock had 9 saves in the Badgers loss.
Head Coach Carly Gettler was extremely pleased with the win. "We saw such good things from our team today and capped off a very positive weekend. Jess got two shutouts, Becca scored twice and got an assist, and we saw great performances from a huge number of individuals. I couldn't be more pleased with our team this weekend."
The Husson women have a quick turnaround, and travel to Waterville to face Colby College at 3:30 PM on Wednesday the 9th.
