Box Score LEWISTON, ME – Senior Julia Rafferty scored twice in a five-minute span in the second half to lead Bates College women's soccer past Husson University, 4-0, at Russell Street Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Rafferty (Reading, Mass.) scored her first goal off a pass from classmate Kara Stefaniak (Needham, Mass.) in the 49th minute as Stefaniak attacked along the right side and sent a cross in front of the net which Rafferty headed home.
The tally came just 63 seconds after sophomore Karen Lockhart (East Greenwich, R.I.) converted in a similar fashion as she headed a ball into the net off a service from classmate Leah Humes (Beaconsfield, Quebec) who made her way past the defense on the right flank.
The scoring came to a close in the second half as Rafferty netted her second goal of the game in the 53rd minute after winning a ball in the box and slotting a shot past the keeper.
Junior Dakota Donovan (Marblehead, Mass.) opened the game's scoring with a strike in the 30th minute. After receiving a pass from sophomore Lily Peterson (Duxbury, Mass.) just outside on the box on the left side, Donovan fired a shot that ricocheted off the right post before crossing the end line.
Bates goalkeepers Anabel Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) and Alyssa Morgosh (Carlsbad, Calif.) combined for the shutout while Husson goalie Jess Poulin (Albion, ME) made a season-high 14 saves.
"Overall, we put together a feisty, competitive performance today. I'm proud of the team for the things they did well, but I'm disappointed by the 8 minutes in the second half where we gave up three goals and let the game get away from us," said Head Coach Carly Gettler, "Jess, Erin, Courtney, Mariah, and Rachel deserve recognition for outstanding play. We'll look to tidy up a few things as we head into the last weekend of the regular season and then playoffs.
Husson will visit Colby-Sawyer on Saturday at 12:30 PM for their final regular season game.
