Husson Falls to #3 Amherst

Box Score

Bangor, ME – The Husson University men's soccer team could not get much going offensively against the visiting Amherst Lord Jeffs and dropped a 3-0 non-conference game to fall to 5-5-3 overall on the season. The Jeffs improve to 9-0-2 on the season and stretch their unbeaten streak to 31 consecutive games.

Amherst found open lanes all afternoon, recording 45 total shots to Husson's 1. The Lord Jeffs Christopher Martin got the scoring started for Amherst by beating three Eagles defenders to the left side of the goal, and scoring from nearly an impossible angle to put the Jeffs up 1-0 in the 19th minute.

After a few more shots on goal that were saved by Brian Potter (Waterville, ME), Amherst found the back on the net again in the 32nd minute after Bubba Van Wie found Greg Singer on the doorstep, and he beat Potter to make it 2-0.

Less than a minute later, Van Wie took it himself and dribbled past multiple Husson defenders and recorded a goal of his own to go along with his assist to provide the final goal of the afternoon for either team and seal the win at 3-0.

The Eagles improved in the second half of play, and, although they did not record a shot, the passing lanes opened up and they moved the ball much better.

Head Coach Jeff Gettler said of the contest, "the first half we seemed like deer in headlights. We put most of our energy into defending and got stretched out--we wanted to be far more compact. We adjusted at halftime and saw much better results. The passing was much crisper, and the defense looked much better as well. Overall, this was a great test for us, and if we want to be successful and move on to win a championship, we are going to need to play teams like Amherst. I think we learned a lot today."

Husson took control of the North Atlantic Conference with a convincing win over New England College yesterday, and will travel south on Saturday the 19th for a conference match-up against the 6th place Thomas Terriers at 3:30 PM.
