Box Score Bangor, ME – Husson University improved to 5-0-2 in North Atlantic Conference play Saturday night with a 3-1 win over New England College.
The two squads played through an almost scoreless first half before Husson's Stephen Berenyi (Levant, ME) broke the 0-0 tie in the 32nd minute. Berenyi scored the goal on a header try from the front of the net. Joshua Bean (Ellsworth, ME) registered the assist on the goal for Husson.
Both teams saw opportunity in the first half as New England College put eight shots on goal while the Eagles put four shots on goal. Brian Potter (Waterville, ME) made a couple of beautiful saves as he helped the Eagles take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The 54th minute of play saw the Eagles extending their lead to 2-0 off the head of Jimmy Fitzpatrick (Houlton, ME) who placed a perfectly headed ball into the right side of the net. Fitzpatrick received the pass from Cam Libbey (Hampden, ME).
Alain Tuyishime (Rwanda) pushed the Husson lead to 3-0 in the 59th minute. Tuyishime came down the right side as he received a pass from Fitzpatrick who was pushing up the left side. Tuyishime dribbled the ball toward the net, leaped over the goalkeeper and managed to find the ball on the other side for the easy put away.
Sebastian Andersson put the Pilgrims on the board in the 83rd minute. Andersson headed a ball over the outstretched arms of Potter for the goal. Rob Lucas was credited with the assist on the goal.
Brian Potter (Waterville, ME) made 10 saves while allowing just one goal in 90 minutes of play.
Coach Gettler stated after the win "Great performance tonight. We were solid defensively I thought but you know we took great chances and I thought the goals were fantastic tonight. And again lots of assists so you know they were created as a team and just a good solid performance with a lot on the line. So now we go to the next big game tomorrow".
The Eagles return to action tomorrow afternoon as the play host to Amherst at 2:30 PM for a non-conference match.
