Box Score Bangor, ME- Husson Men's Soccer lost 2-1 in double overtime Friday night at Boucher Field to Maine Maritime Academy during game 1 of the 1st Annual New Balance Challenge Cup. MMA Sophomore David Clough headed in a goal with 6:58 left in the second overtime off a corner kick by Junior Gabriel Warren.
Both teams scored in the first half and then stayed scoreless with many scoring opportunities. Maine Maritime Senior Benjamin Russell scored with 33:32 left in the first half of the game on a ball that bounced around in front of the net after a throw in.
Husson had 5 shots in the first half, with their lone goal coming from Sophomore Phil Frost netting the ball after a throw in at 27:52. In the second half Husson continued their offensive pressure with 7 shots and 6 corner kicks providing a lot of activity in front of the net for Maine Maritime Junior goalkeeper William Trace Lacour.
Flip throws by Senior Andrew Austin and corner kicks by Senior James Crockford created a lot of offensive movement and opportunities for the Eagles. Senior Goalkeeper Mason Smith had 7 saves, in a strong performance, including a huge save with 4:20 left in the first overtime that ignited the large crowd of over 300 people.
The 1-2 Eagles will face University of Massachusetts at Boston Saturday (Sept. 8) at 3:00 PM in day two of the New Balance Challenge Cup. Maine Maritime and University of Massachusetts at Boston will play the final game of the cup on Sunday (Sept. 9) at 3:00 PM.
