Box Score 2 The Husson women's volleyball team won their first two conference matches of the 2012 season in Vermont on Saturday afternoon.
First, the Eagles took down Green Mountain College in four sets 19-25, 25-16, 25-16, and 25-13. Later in the day, Husson swept Castleton State College in a heated match 25-22, 26-24, and 25-23.
The two victories improve Husson's overall record to 10-5, and extends their win streak to seven.
In their first match against hosting Green Mountain, Husson started out shaky offensively and dropped the first set 25-19. The Eagles righted the ship the next three games and won them all, never surrendering more than 16 points.
Husson's three seniors led the way to victory.
Middle-hitter Hannah Olstad (Farmington, NH) paced the offense with 12 kills and seven service aces. Setter Aleta Johnson (Milton, NH) handed out 26 assists on the match, as well as delivering an impressive 12 aces and registering nine digs. Outside-hitter Michelle Smith (New Boston, NH) had a solid all-around match, putting away eight kills, four aces, and picking up 13 digs.
The Green Mountain Eagles were led by junior hitter Kara Egan (Breezy Point, NY) who had 13 kills, 10 digs, and three aces. Sophomore Madison Wage (Cheshire, CT) contributed seven kills, 13 digs, and three aces as well.
It was Husson's sixth straight win, and improved them to 9-5 overall and 1-0 in North Atlantic Conference play. With the loss, GMC falls to 3-10 overall, and 0-1 in the NAC.
In Husson's second match of the day, the Castleton State Spartans gave the Eagles all they could handle.
The Eagles were again led by Olstad who put away 15 kills and had nine digs. Sophomore Alexandra deHertogh (Cumberland, RI) was strong for Husson with nine kills, while junior Kelsey Burrill (Somersworth, NH) had 13 digs to go with five kills of her own. Johnson dished out 32 assists and collected 13 digs as well to help pull out the hard-fought victory.
Senior Nicole Valastro (South Glens Falls, NY) spearheaded the Spartans offense with seven kills and four service aces. Freshman Amanda Chambers (Lake George, NY) had a solid match with four kills and a match-high 20 digs.
The win moves Husson to 10-5 for the season, and 2-0 in NAC play. The loss drops Castleton to 3-7 overall, and 0-2 in the NAC.
Husson's next match will be at home on Wednesday, October 3rd at 7 PM against the Colby Mules.
