Field Hockey Runs Past Wheaton

Box Score

Gorham, Maine – Junior Sabrina Vaillancourt scored three second half goals to lead the Husson University Eagles to a 6-1 win over the Wheaton College (Mass.) Lyons in the fourth and final game of the USM Field Hockey Invitational Sunday afternoon at Hannaford Field in Gorham, Maine.

Trailing 1-0 with 45 minutes gone in the game, Vaillancourt scored a pair of goals in the 46th and 48th minute to lead the Eagles' rally and improve their overall record to 2-0.  Suffering its second loss in as many games, Wheaton dips to 0-2.

Coach Jen Johnstone said, "our offense really clicked today. Sabrina helped us generate a lot of offense and had a great game. Defensively we were challenged at points, but we managed to stay calm and collected overall."

Behind a stellar effort in goal from junior goalkeeper Ellie Massengill  and an unassisted goal in the 23rd minute from junior Eliza Kennedy, the Lyons led the Eagles 1-0 at the half despite being out shot 13-8.  Massengill, who finished the game with 14 saves, made seven saves in the first half.

Massengill helped keep the Lyons ahead 1-0 ten minutes into the second half, before Vaillancourt notched the equalizer on an assist from sophomore Melissa Souza following one of 17 penalty corners for the Eagles. Vaillancourt then gave her team the lead for good with her second goal in short order with an unassisted strike.

Junior Mariah Arno gave the Eagles a two-goal advantage in the 56th minute, before Vaillancourt completed the hat trick with her third goal of the game for a 4-1 Husson lead.  Vaillancourt redirected a pass from freshman Renee Tessier in the 59th minute.  Senior Kara Poirier and freshman Emily Tessier rounded out the scoring for the 6-1 final.

Husson freshman goalkeeper Maicee Gustin made eight saves in the win.  Wheaton junior Jenna Rocha made a pair of defensive saves to aid Massengill.

The Eagles will travel to Biddeford this Wednesday to take on the University of New England on the blue turf. Game time is set for 6:00pm.
