Box Score Bangor, ME - Husson's women's soccer team fought hard but was unable to stop the Golden Bears of Western New England University, losing 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Boucher Field. Husson pressured the net guarded by first year goalkeeper Briana Kubic (Westfield, MA) with 5 shots and 1 corner kick. Rainy conditions made ball control and handling tougher than usual during the final game of the 8th Annual Husson Classic.
Western New England University scored at 38:42 on a penalty kick by Senior Captain Alexis Bshara (West Springfield, MA), after consistent heavy pressure from Husson's back line and many broken up attempts on goal. In the 63rd minute, first year Rachel Suntag (Boonton, NJ) scored off of a pass from first year Chelsea Kuzio (Hampden, ME). The final goal of the game was scored by Junior Amanda Waluszko (Pittsfield, MA) at 77:33 off of a corner kick.
Husson Sophomore goal Keeper Jess Poulin (Albion, ME) had 5 saves. First year Miranda Drinkwater (Greenville, ME), Sophomore Desiree Hamler (Franklin, NJ) and Senior Amanda Mora (Stratford, CT) all chipped in with shots on goal for the Husson women.
"WNEU was a very direct, physical team and will probably be one of the stronger sides we face this season. We handled them well in the first half, but we lost ourselves for a bit in the second half and let them take the game from us" said Husson coach Carly Gettler, "Michaela Bicknell, Erin Boulier, and Brittany Williams all stepped up huge for us today, and, overall, I am very pleased with the way Husson competed over the weekend and the direction in which this team is headed."
Husson falls to 0-2 on the season with the next match at University of New England on Wednesday, September 5, at 6:30 PM.
