Husson Splits Day One With Colby-Sawyer

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Colby-Sawyer won the first game 4-2 and Husson took the nightcap 15-1. The Husson University baseball team split a pair of games with Colby-Sawyer College in Friday's NEAC East doubleheader at Kelsey Field.

Husson goes to 9-12 overall and is 6-4 in the NEAC. Colby-Sawyer's record goes to 11-13 overall and 5-7 in the conference.

In game one Colby-Sawyer opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by senior Justin Martin. Martin knocked in junior Tyler Stotz who scored from first after reaching on a walk.

The Chargers added three runs (all unearned) in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Jon Wylie hit a sacrifice fly to center to score senior Greg Mehuron. Sophomore Jake Szulak then connected for a single that scored Stotz. Martin scored the Chargers' third run of the inning on a double steal with Szulak.

Husson responded in the next half inning with a pair of runs to cut the deficit in half. Sophomore Niko Ververis (Plainfield, Conn.) hit a single to left that scored sophomore Nick Lancisi. Junior Shawn Smith (Winterport, Maine) came around from second to score after a bobble by the left fielder.

Both pitchers were able to shut down the bats the rest of the way to end the game 4-2 in favor of Colby-Sawyer.

Freshman Joe Stanevicz also went the distance for the Eagles and gave up one earned run on five hits. Colby-Sawyer sophomore Alex Drost threw his third complete game of the season and earned his second win. Drost surrendered one earned run and struck out three.

Lancisi had a game-high three hits in four at-bats for Husson. Martin led the Chargers with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with a run and an RBI.

The Eagles' bats came alive in the night cap as they exploded for 15 runs on 14 hits. Husson began the game with a three spot on an RBI double from Lancisi and a two-RBI double from Ververis.

Husson tacked on two more in the second on an RBI single from senior Kyle Vanidestine and an RBI double from junior Jake Arthers.

The Eagles benefited from a few Colby-Sawyer miscues in the fourth inning and scored three unearned runs.

In the top of the seventh, Husson sent 11 men to the plate as they tacked on seven more runs. Shawn Smith had a two-run single, while sophomore Benjamin McLain added a two-run triple.

Husson freshman hurler Spencer Allen (Gardiner, Maine) scattered four hits over the first six innings before allowing a run on two hits in the seventh.  Junior Sean Gavin knocked in junior Cameron Knight on a sac fly for Colby-Sawyer's lone run.

Allen improved to 1-2 on the season with a complete game six-hitter. Sophomore PJ Singster took the loss for the Chargers.

Vanidestine led the Eagles with a 4-for-5 night at the plate, including three runs and two runs batted in. Ververis knocked in a team best three runs.

These two teams will square off once again on Saturday as Colby-Sawyer hosts Husson in another doubleheader slated for noon.
