Box Score Waltham, MA – Husson women's basketball fell in a New Year's Eve match against Brandeis on Monday afternoon, 63-43. Husson stands at 1-6 on the season after the loss, while Brandeis improves to 6-5.
First year Amanda Johnson (Skowhegan, ME) was the leading scorer for the Eagles with 11 points on the afternoon, hitting 4-of-6 overall and 2-of-4 from 3-point range. Chrissy Larrabee (Brooks, ME) added 9 points and 9 rebounds, and Stephanie Comstock (Bangor, ME) added 8 points for the Eagles. Brandeis junior guard Kasey Dean (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) led all scorers with 12 points.
Husson was its own worst enemy at times, giving Brandeis a 34-19 turnover advantage that turned into a 29-14 edge in points off turnovers. The Eagles got off to a fast start in the contest, outscoring Brandeis 14-5 over the first 5:45, including six-straight points by junior forward Comstock.
Brandeis responded with 14 of the game's next 16 points, going ahead for the first time at the 7:07 mark on a Dean jumper. It was still a 23-21 game with 4:24 left before the intermission when the Judges closed on an 11-4 string, capped by Cain's bucket just before the horn that made it 34-25, Brandeis, headed into the locker room. The Judges then opened the second half by holding Husson to just one field goal over the first seven-and-a-half minutes, pushing the lead to 20 points and never looking back.
Husson plays at North Atlantic Conference foe New England College on Friday, Jan. 4 at 5:30 p.m. Brandeis opens University Athletic Association play on Saturday, Jan. 5, at home against rival New York University at 1 p.m.
