Box Score Bangor, ME- Husson was unable to tame the Lyons of Wheaton College Sunday afternoon at Boucher Field, falling 4-0.
Wheaton College struck first with a goal coming from Sophomore Travis Blair (Hastings, NY) on a pass from Sophomore Luke Finkelstein (Peabody, MA) at 9:29 into the game. Blair snuck the ball over the top of Husson Senior goalkeeper Mason Smith's (Houma, LA) head, bouncing the ball into the net.
Smith made a very notable save coming into the 22nd minute when he laid out and kicked back a laser of a shot from First Year Kevin Gil (Pawtucket, RI).
For most of the 1st half it seemed as though Husson was just one perfectly executed shot away from tying it up, seeing a lot of activity in front of Wheaton's First Year goal keeper Matt Dickey (Newton, MA).
In the 54th minute Blair struck again this time off a pass from Senior David Turina (North Yarmouth, ME) putting the Lyons up 2-0. Only minutes later at 56:41 Sophomore Marlon Ramalho (Framingham, MA) headed in a cross pass from Finkelstein to put Wheaton ahead 3-0.
At 78:21 Wheaton scored their final goal of the game coming from First Year Kai Gooden (London, England) to put the Lyons ahead for good 4-0.
"I thought today on the back of arguably our best performance of the season, on Saturday, we came out today and had our worst. It was about two or three steps backwards for our team. I know the guys were tired but our inability to deal with mental fatigue and our inability to deal with the emotional qualities of finding intensity, finding a chance to be mentally tough, and deal with adversity was just not there." Said Coach Jeff Gettler after the loss, "We've got a long way to go, Wednesday is another non-conference game, but this is the defining week of the season for us, so we've got a big step to take to make a step forward after this."
Wheaton led Husson 11-5 in shots. Husson goalkeeper Smith ended the game with 4 saves, Wheaton goalkeeper Dickey stopped all 3 shots on goal that he faced.
With this win Husson becomes 7-4 on the season, moving on to face Bates College in a non-conference match up, at home on Wednesday (October 10th) at 7:00PM.
