Eagles Split At USM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Gorham, ME - The Husson volleyball team came away with a split in two matches at the University of Southern Maine Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles opened the day by falling to UNB-St. John's in straight sets (25-17, 25-10, 25-17) but came away with a thrilling 5-set comeback victory against USM (17-25, 19-25, 25-19, 25-14, 15-9) to even out the day.

In the match against the UNB-St. John Seawolves, hitting and receiving errors proved to be the Eagles' downfall.  Husson hit -.015 as a team for the match, and the Seawolves notched an impressive 15 aces in just the three sets.

UNB-St. John's was led by Katherine Houser, who had nine kills to go along with two aces and a pair of solo blocks.  Sumire Maillet and Maddie Tees added five kills apiece for the victors, while Maillet also had five aces.  Megan Fitzpatrick served up a team-high six aces as well as contributing seven digs.

Hannah Olstad (Farmington, NH) had team-highs with five kills and two aces for Husson, while Kelsey Burrill (Somersworth, NH) contributed four kills and four digs in the loss.

The Eagles' second match of the day started out equally as bleak, as they dropped the first two sets to the USM Huskies.  But Husson would win the next two games, forcing a fifth and deciding set which they were able to win to seal the come-from-behind victory.

The Eagles were again led by Olstad, who put away 24 kills in the five sets as well as collecting 12 digs.  Michelle Smith (New Boston, NH) had an impressive all-around match posting 11 kills, 21 digs, and four service aces.  Burrill was again a heavy contributor with 12 kills and 11 digs, while Aleta Johnson (Milton, NH) dished out a match-high 39 assists in the win.

The Huskies were paced by Madalyn Terry, who put away 12 kills to go along with six digs and two aces.  Annie Mitchell and Krista Keene each had nine kills on 24 attacks, while Nicole Hansen posted 30 assists and Demi Ruder picked up a match-high 25 digs in defeat.

With the split, the Eagles' overall record moves to 11-7 for the season, and they remain 2-0 in conference play.

Husson's next match will be Wednesday, October 10, on the road at Saint Joseph's in Standish.  Match time is 7 PM.
