Box Score Bangor, ME – Husson field hockey held onto its number one overall seed in the 2012 NAC Field Hockey tournament, downing the Lasell Lasers Saturday at the Winkin Complex, 5-0. Mariah Arno led the Eagles, scoring two key goals in the first half.
Head Coach Jen Johnstone's squad dominated play early, earning six penalty corners and seven shots in the opening minutes. Junior Sabrina Vaillancourt moved the ball up field almost 15 minutes in, passing across the face of the cage to a streaking Arno for Husson's first goal.
Arno earned another tally with just over a minute left in the first frame putting away a penalty stroke on Laser keeper Cassie Aviles. Husson led at the half, 2-0.
The Eagles looked even more impressive in the second, as Vaillancourt made her signature move down the sideline, cutting in toward cage right at the endline. Aviles took the bait and Sabrina tucked in her second point of the game past the near post.
Husson continued to pressure and control play, scoring a goal ten minutes later off the stick of Chrissy Larrabee unassisted and again over nine minutes later on a own goal by the Lasers. The 5-0 score would prove to be the final, good enough to move the Eagles into the semifinal round of the NAC tournament.
Johnstone said of the win: "We played so well as a team today. Defensively we were smart and disciplined and offensively we generated a lot and executed well. We are playing really pretty field hockey right now."
Husson will take to the Winkin Complex again this Wednesday in their semifinal matchup with New England College, winner of the 4/5 matchup with St. Joseph's College. Make sure to visit HussonEagles.com for more info on Wednesday's game.
