Box Score Bangor, ME- Husson Men's Soccer defeated Lyndon State College 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Boucher Field in the Quarterfinals of the NAC Championship.
Two early goals for Husson were enough to put them past the 7th seeded Lyndon State Hornets. Husson who entered the match ranked 2nd in the NAC bracket found themselves locked into an extremely physical match with Lyndon, a team they beat earlier in the season at Lyndon 3-0.
Sophomore Stephen Berenyi (Levant, ME) put the Eagles on top 1-0 in the 5th minute of the game when he took a ball passed up from sophomore Phil Frost (Bangor, ME) and senior captain James Crockford (Watford, England) and placed it perfectly beyond the reach of the Hornets goalkeeper, senior Jason Gray (East Thetford, VT).
Just over ten minutes later in the 17th minute Eagles junior Zach Emeigh (Ellsworth, ME) blasted a ball into net on a free kick, putting Husson up 2-0.
Hornet first year Blake Begnoche (Fairfax, VT) finally got a ball in net, to notch the score to 2-1, after attempting a number of shots on Husson goalkeeper sophomore Brian Potter (Waterville, ME).
The remainder of the game went without seeing a change on the scoreboard but did not lack excitement.
Potter earned the victory in net stopping 5 shots. Husson had numerous opportunities taking 29 shots on the day, Gray had an equally impressive performance in net for Lyndon.
"This was a good win. At this time of the year with playoff soccer my philosophy is; you win and you advance and that's the most important thing to focus on." Said Coach Jeff Gettler after the win, "You know lately we have shown an ability to play to the level of our opponent and unfortunately today I thought we did that after getting the two goals, but we won and we are advancing and we are pretty excited to play in the semifinals."
Husson will play New England College on Tuesday at Boucher Field. The time of the game is TBD.
