Box Score Bangor, ME - The Husson Eagles Field Hockey team continued their strong play in conference with a 2-0 win over the Simmons College Sharks Sunday afternoon.
The Eagles got an early goal from Sabrina Vaillancourt (Newport, ME) off an assist from Mariah Arno (Dover-Foxcroft, ME) just 1:09 into the game.
That would prove to be the game-winner, as Husson goaltender Maicee Gustin (Dexter, ME) stopped all 12 shots she faced for her first shutout of the season.
The Eagles got an insurance goal early in the second half as Kara Poirier (Berlin, NH) was able to put one home off a rebound in front of the net.
Despite the loss, the Sharks defense played strong all game as Husson was in control of possession for most of the contest. Goaltender Renna Smith (Belfast, ME) played well in net, stopping 15 of 17 shots she faced.
The win improves Husson to 8-7 overall, and 6-1 in North Atlantic Conference play. The loss drops Simmons to 4-12 overall, 3-5 in the NAC.
The Eagles will host a doubleheader to wrap up the 2012 regular season next weekend. They will play Colby-Sawyer Saturday at noon, and Castleton State Sunday at 1 PM. The game against Castleton could very well decide who ends up with home-field advantage in the upcoming NAC playoffs.
