Eagles Split In Conference Play

Bangor, ME - The Husson Eagles volleyball team came out of Homecoming weekend with a 1-1 split after falling to Colby-Sawyer College early on, but ending the day with a victory over U-Maine Farmington.  

Husson fell to the Chargers in straight sets (25-12, 25-12, 25-6) to start out the day.  Later on, the Eagles were able to pick up their third conference victory of the year with a sweep of U-Maine Farmington (25-18, 25-15, 25-16).  

In the other NAC matches, Maine Maritime handled U-Maine Farmington in three games (25-14, 25-22, 25-20), while Colby-Sawyer swept Maine Maritime (25-20, 25-12, 25-8). 

In the first match of the day, the Colby-Sawyer Chargers coasted to victory over the Eagles.  The Chargers combined for an impressive .462 hitting percentage, while also amassing 14 service aces. 

Junior middle-hitter Emilee McBride (Strafford, NH) dominated the match for Colby-Sawyer, posting 10 kills on 15 attacks while also adding six solo blocks.  Sophomore Jackie Keating (Marshfield, MA) was a big contributor off the bench for the victors, putting away nine kills on just 10 attempts.  

The Eagles were led by Hannah Olstad (Farmington, NH) who had six kills and five digs in the loss.  

 

In the next match, the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners had their hands full but held on to sweep the U-Maine Farmington Beavers.  

Sophomore Sydney Robertson (Barnstead, NH) paced the Mariner attack with six kills and a pair of aces.  Ariel Knights (Brookton, ME) and Betsy Trenckmann (La Veta, CO) each had four kills, while Jennifer Dixon (Woodstock, MD) doled out 14 assists in the victory.

Jennifer Tupper (Lamoine, ME) led the Beavers with five kills and two aces, while Emily Bennett (Kennebunkport, ME) and Nicole Osborne (Calais, ME) each contributed four kills in defeat.  

 

In the third match of the afternoon, the defending conference champion Chargers made yet another statement by hitting .517 as a team and defeating Maine Maritime with relative ease.  

Keating again was solid off the bench, as her and Courtney O'Hara (Mystic, CT) each had 10 kills on 16 attempts for the winners.  Lindsey Raumikaitis (Danville, NH) and McBride put away six kills apiece, while freshman setter Laura Smolinski (Hebron, CT) dished out 32 assists. 

Maine Maritime was again led by Robertson who had three kills, and Dixon who handed out 11 assists.  

 

In the final match of the day, the Husson Eagles prevailed against UMF by hitting .342 as a team to win their seniors' last regular season home game.  

Husson was indeed led by its three seniors, as Olstad had 11 kills on 21 attacks, Michelle Smith (New Boston, NH) had 8 kills and two aces, and Aleta Johnson (Milton, NH) divvied up 28 assists while notching three aces.

The Beavers were led by Julia Christie (Lamoine, ME) who had eight kills on 12 attempts, and Tupper who posted four kills.  

With the two wins, Colby-Sawyer improves to 11-13 overall and 5-0 in conference play to take sole possession of first place. 

After splitting their matches, Husson moves to 12-9 (3-1, 2nd place NAC) and Maine Maritime goes to 8-9 (2-2, 5th NAC).  

U-Maine Farmington falls to 5-13 (2-3, 6th NAC) with the two losses.  

Husson's next match will be on the road at Maine Maritime Wednesday night, October 17.  Match time between the Eagles and the Mariners is set for 7PM.
