Husson Edges Bates College in Overtime Thriller

Box Score

Bangor, ME- Husson University Men's Soccer beat Bates College 3-2 in overtime Wednesday night at Boucher Field.

Husson got on the board first at 11:43 when First Year Cam Libbey (Hampden, ME) scored on a pass from Senior James Crockford (Watford, England). With a perfect shot, Libbey snuck the ball in the lower left corner of the net right past Bates First Year goalkeeper Joe Maffly-Kipp (Chapel Hill, NC).

For the rest of the first half both teams saw plenty of pressure in front of their nets, Bates led the shots on goal 13 -8 going into the second half.

Bates Senior John Murphy (Yarmouth, ME) tied the score up in the 49th minute when his curving shot found the back of a net on a free kick.

Husson answered right back at 50:34 when Senior Trevor Higgins (Kittery, ME) placed a ball up field for Sophomore Phil Frost (Bangor, ME). Frost took the ball past a defender and placed it in the net making it 2-1 Eagles.

Bobcat Sophomore Aaron Nickelsburg (Concord, MA) evened the score once again when he scored unassisted in the 82nd minute. At the end of regulation the teams remained tied at 2-2.

In the 96th minute of the game in overtime, under a heavy rain, Frost scored his second goal of the game when he headed in a free kick from Crockford.

"It was a great performance tonight. The guys got an early goal, but Bates came back, and we responded every time. We decided to play a lot of players tonight with 2 league games coming up this weekend." Said Coach Jeff Gettler after the win, "It was a true team victory."

Husson Senior goalkeeper Mason Smith (Houma, LA) stopped 10 shots, earning the win. Bobcat goalkeeper Maffly-Kipp stopped 11 shots. Statistically the teams were as equally matched as the scoreboard would suggest, Bates edged Husson on shots on goal 26-25.

With this win the Eagles improve to 8-4 on the season, hosting two conference match ups this weekend for Husson Homecoming when Castleton State comes to town on Saturday (October 13) for a 3:30PM match time and Green Mountain State on Sunday (October 14) at 2:30PM.
