JOHNSON, VT – Visiting Husson University used a 17-3 run toward the end of the first half to key a 70-47 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) men's basketball victory over host Johnson State College on Saturday. The Eagles improve to 5-9, 5-3 NAC while Johnson slides to 3-11, 3-5 NAC).
Husson received a double-double from junior swing man Eric Modica (Kittery, ME) who finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds while also getting a game-high 14 points from sophomore guard Phil Leighton (Naples, ME). Sophomore Luis Medina (Hartford, CT) continued to impress in his first weekend back with the Eagles, chipping in with 11 points and four assists.
Johnson saw only junior point guard Andy Bousono (Philadelphia, PA) reach double-figures on the day with 13 points while collecting three steals. Sophomore Billy Boyd (Hardwick, VT) would add six points and seven rebounds. The Badgers offense was held to 26% shooting on the day while only hitting 2-of-14 3-point field goal attempts.
With the Eagles leading 20-15 with 7:19 remaining the first half junior guard Mike Gonzales (Fort Washington, MD) would start the 17-3 surge by knocking down a 3-pointer and go on to net all nine of his points on the day during the run that helped Husson to a 37-21 halftime lead.
The Eagles will return home to Newman Gymnasium on Thursday, January 19th against the University of Maine-Farmington, and are set to tip off against the NAC-leading Beavers at 5:30 pm. Johnson will play the last game of a four-game home stand on Thursday in the next outing when they host Castleton State College at 5:30 pm.
