Box Score Castine, ME – Andrew Austin (Ellsworth, ME) assisted on both goals as Husson University handed Maine Maritime Academy a 2-0 setback in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) at Ritchie Field on Sunday. The Eagles (4-4-1, 2-0 NAC) scored early in both halves to hand the Mariners (4-2-1, 1-1 NAC) their first loss in conference play.
Austin's cartwheel throw-in from the left sideline found its way through the wickets of defender Alex Pederson (Carmel, ME) and was redirected home by Phillip Frost (Bangor, ME) midway through the 12th minute.
Maine Maritime, which out-shot its guests 16-13, directed play at the Husson net for the remainder of the half, but was unable to solve Brian Potter (Waterville, ME). He recorded his third shutout of the season, making five saves.
Austin took the wind out of the Mariners' sails 70 seconds into the second half with another long throw-in. This time, Tyler Metevier (Kittery, ME) headed it past William Trace LaCour (Charlottesvile, VA). LaCour recorded four saves in absorbing the loss.
Head Coach Jeff Gettler was delighted with the win after the game, "The guys put in a gutty performance, and it was a great league result again. This was our second time going out and getting a NAC victory away from home. We're at the top of the standings with Castleton, and that's where we want to be. Everyone's excited to return home for Homecoming next Saturday."
The Eagles take the home pitch at Boucher Field on Saturday, October 1st at 1:00 pm when they host Johnson State as part of Husson's Homecoming. The Mariners return to action next Saturday when Lyndon State visits Castine for more NAC play.
