Box Score North Adams, MA - The Union College men's soccer team captured the 2011 CIAO Classic title with an unblemished mark of 2-0. Husson University was named tournament runner-up following a 1-0 win over host MCLA. Union's Sebastiaan Jansen was named the offensive MVP, while Husson's Brian Potter earned defensive MVP honors.
MCLA vs. Husson-
Husson used a first half goal by Zach Emeigh in the 21st minute to hold off MCLA 1-0 in the final game of the tournament. With the win, the Eagles move to 2-2-1, while MCLA drops to 2-2 overall.
Emeigh's goal was the work of efficient passing as Ahmed Abdirahman played the ball upfield to Philip Frost who crossed over to Emeigh for the eventual game winner. Both teams had several scoring chances, however physical defensive play on both sides kept scoring opportunities down.
The Trailblazers had a few opportunities late including good looks from Tedd Cecchitelli and Liroy Ozinci. Both were denied by the stellar play of Potter. He notched 13 saves to earn the shutout. His counterpart also played well, MCLA keeper Dillon Wager registered 7 saves on the afternoon.
The physical play resulted in seven combined yellow cards and 27 fouls.
Head Coach Jeff Gettler was happy with his team's performance after the game, "It was a gutty win out there today. We came out and got one early, and then we were able to spurn any and all chances they had after that. In the first half we made a few defensive errors, but Potter was there to back us up all afternoon; he played very well.
"It was a good win for the boys, I'm glad we came out with the attitude and mentality that we needed to take 2nd in the tournament, which is an accomplishment that we're excited about." Gettler added.
The Eagles take to the pitch again Wednesday the 14th when they travel to Waterville, ME to take on the Mules of Colby College for a 4:30 pm start.
