Box Score The Eagles claimed the North Eastern Athletic Conference East Division Baseball Championship with a 3-1 victory over the Castleton Spartans. A tremendous rivalry exists between the Eagles and Spartans, having met in the East Division Championship for the past three years and Husson has appeared in the championship for seven consecutive years. While the Spartans took the title last year, the Eagles reclaimed it with sharp pitching and timely hitting. With the win, Husson will travel to Castleton for the Divisional Crossover Championship and will face Penn State Burkes on May 7-8. The winner of that three-game series will receive an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament.
Husson scored in the first inning when Dylan Foster tallied an unearned run off an RBI from Ethan Guerette. The Eagles tacked on another run in the bottom of the second off a sacrifice fly to right field by Cody McInnis that plated Tom Crews. In the fourth inning, a Kyle Rennick sacrifice fly to center field pushed Crews across the plate, following a throwing error by Castleton.
Castleton threatened in the top of the fifth inning when Mathew Pause singled to left field and advanced to second following a David Brandt single to shortstop. The inning ended with Pause stranded on second base.
Trailing 3-0, Eisenhoof led off the top of the ninth inning for Castleton, hitting a chopper that was fielded by Husson's Dan Beatham and flicked to first, but not in time. A single to left field by Zack Mayo advanced Eisenhoof to second with no outs. Beatham managed to strikeout Aaron Zrenda on a curve ball but Joe Borowski reached on a throwing error. Eisenhuth advanced to third and scored the Spartan's only run of the game off the error. The game ended with an Adam Greenlese groundout to McInnis.
Castleton's Brandon Fay pitched a complete game loss with five strikeouts, four walks, three runs allowed and four hits in eight innings of work. Beatham earned the win for the Eagles for his nine innings of pitching that included six strikeouts, one run allowed, and two walks on six hits. For his efforts, Beatham was named the Tournament MVP.
Offensively, Eisenhuth led the Spartans hitting 1-4 with one run scored. The hits were spread among the Castleton offense with 1-4 efforts from Jack Lancelin, Zak Mayo, and Peter Wagner.
Dylan Foster led the Eagles with a 2-4 effort from the plate that included one run scored. Kevin Rennick, Cody McInnis, and Ethan Guerette each recorded RBI's on the win.
Husson's Head Coach Jason Harvey credited his team's productivity for the championship win. "We came up big on big situations. This was not our best offensive game but we executed when we needed to. We did a great job on the mound. I'm really proud my guys for coming through in big games this tournament and that should help us as we head to the divisional championship game this weekend"
