Box Score Bangor, ME – The top-seeded Husson Eagles held off a scrappy Maine Farmington team 66-62 to earn themselves a spot in the North Atlantic Conference Championship game Saturday at 4:30 pm from the Newman Gymnasium at host Husson University.
Husson was led by Amanda Gifford (Lee, ME) who scored 14 points and finished the game with 7 rebounds; also in double figures was Kelli Murray (Shawmut, ME) who had 12. Three other Eagles finished the game with 9 points including NAC Player of the Year Bethany Sevey (Skowhegan, ME). Ashley Busque (Belgrade, ME) led Farmington and all scorers with 22 points and 9 rebounds on the night. Kenni Norton (Strong, ME) also put up double digits in the points column, finishing with 13, and two Beavers; Jillain Ross (Belfast, ME) and Paige Saunders (Surry, ME) had 10 or more rebounds.
The Eagles jumped out to an early lead before Farmington could get their offense going, leading to a tightly contested first half with the eagles leading 39-32 at the break. The home team was lead in scoring by Kelli Murray, who had 9 points and Amanda Gifford also added 8 points and 7 assists before half. Ashley Busque led the Beavers and all scorers with 12 points in the first frame; she also led Farmington with 6 rebounds, the most of anyone on the court. Husson shot 43.8% from the floor, and went 6-13 from deep, good for 46.2%. The Beavers shot just 33.3%, but out-rebounded the Eagles 22-17.
The Eagles led by as many as 9 in the second half, but the last two minutes were neck-and-neck eventually coming down to free throws as Husson had the narrow edge. The Eagles out-shot Farmington 35.9% to 34.8%, but the Beavers pulled down 48 rebounds to Husson's 34.
Husson will await the winner of the last semifinal game tonight between Maine Maritime and Castleton, with tomorrow's Championship game scheduled to tip-off at 4:30 pm, after the Men's final.
