Eagles Drop Loss to Thomas; Remain Atop NAC as Championship Host

The Husson University men's basketball team dropped a 99-95 loss to Thomas College at Husson's Newman Gymnasium.  Despite the loss, the Eagles remain the top seed in the North Atlantic Conference at the end of regular season play, earning the right to host the NAC championship on February 25-26.  The Eagles fall to 19-6 (12-2 NAC) while Thomas improves to 14-10 (10-5 NAC).

Husson honored the contributions made by Jay Uhrin and Josh Jones before the start of today's game with a senior day presentation. Uhrin got the Eagles on the board first with a jump shot from the top of the key, followed by a similar shot by Josh Jones to give Husson  a quick 4-0 lead.  Thomas capitalized on numerous Husson turnovers in the opening minutes of the game to gain a 9-4 advantage.  Travis Dorsey powered a driving layup through the lane to put the Terriers up 16-6 four minutes into the game.

Eric Modica hit a three to bring the Eagles within two of Thomas at 18-20 with 12:45 left in the half.  Jay Uhrin tied the game with 9:51 remaining in the half when he scored a jumper from the floor followed immediately by a dunk by Jones to give the Eagles a 28-26 lead.  Isiah Brathwaite once again knotted the score at 28 apiece with an inside layup and then hit a three from the top of the key to push the Terrier lead to 31-28.  After a slew of Husson turnovers,  Tony Juco nailed a three point shot to push the Thomas score to 37-28.

Marc Zaharchuk brought the Eagles to within one of the Terriers at 38-39 with a layup with 4:22 left on the half.  An Uhrin pass set up a Zaharchuk basket to tie the game at 40 with 3:10 left.  Braithwaite responded with a three to put the Terriers up 43-40.  Ryan Newton took an open look three to up the Thomas score to 46-40.  The second half ended with a 46-42 Thomas advantage.

Josh Jones led all scorers with 20 points and 5 rebounds on the half while Husson's Jay Uhrin tallied 8 points.  Andrew Duncanson contributed 11 points to the Terriers followed by Salvador, Dorsey, Brathwaite, and DeVaughn with six points apiece.

Daeshawn McMorrin opened the half with a quick deuce.  Eric Modica reclaimed the Husson lead with a three-point shot from the top-left of the key to push the score to 49-48.  Salvador tied the game at 66 with 11:53 left in the half followed by a turnover and a Dorsey layup to give a Thomas a 68-66 advantage. 

De Vaughn scored a layup to put the Terriers up by 10 with 6:02 left in the game but was immediately answered by a three by Brad Libby.  With 3:33 left in the game, Thomas' Duncanson hit a spinning jumper from the top of the lane to make it a 91-81 lead.  Uhrin responded with a three to cut the Thomas lead to 91-84 and proceeded to make one of two foul shots to make it a 91-85 game.  Uhrin battled to the boards for a layup to bring the Eagles within four of the Terriers at 91-87.  Husson's Brad Libby made both one of two foul shots to bring the score to 91-88.  A quick layup by De Vaughn upped the Terriers to 93-88 with 1:30 left in the game.  At the line, Thomas' Franklin Salvador sunk both of his foul shots pushing the Terriers to 95-88.  With 1:10 left in the game, Uhrin nailed a three, dialing the Eagles to within four at 95-91.  With 26.1 on the clock, Thomas' Salvador was fouled and made both shots, upping the Terriers to 97-91.  McMorrin would run the court and score a basket for the Eagles.  Salvador once again hit both foul shots with 16.4 seconds left for a 99-93 Terrier score.  With 10.8 seconds left in the game, Eric Modica was fouled and made both of his shots however the Eagles could not recover the point deficit and the game ended with a 99-95 Thomas win.

Josh Jones led all scorers with a double-double of 31 points and 14 rebounds, shooting 17-21 from the floor.  Jay Uhrin contributed 28 points and 8 rebounds, followed by Eric Modica with 12 points.

Uhrin also scored his 1,000th career point as an Eagle with about four and a half minutes to go in the second half, needing only 19 on the game to accomplish the milestone. Jay is now the 38th Brave and/or Eagle to score 1,000 points in his career at Husson.

For Thomas, Jarrad DeVaughn led the charge with a double-double consisting of 23 points and 10 rebounds.  Andrew Duncanson contributed 21 points, 5 rebounds, and 9 assists while Franklin Salvador tallied 18 points on the win.

"Thomas did a good job of getting us outside our comfort zone offensively and we reacted poorly to their pressure," stated Head Coach Warren Caruso.  "We have some work to do this weekend if we are going to finish the season with a NAC championship."
