Eagles 'Think Pink', Earn NAC Win

Box Score

In tonight's North Atlantic Conference match-up, both Husson and Maine Farmington's women's basketball teams sported pink warm-up t-shirts as they participated in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) "Pink Zone" to raise awareness for breast cancer prevention and benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The Eagles emerged victorious with a 73-61 victory over the Beavers, improving their record to 14-11.  With the loss, Maine Farmington falls to 13-12.

Maine Farmington reached the scoreboard first with a layup by Kenni Norton.  The Eagles gained their first lead of the game off a Bethany Sevey three-point shot.  Farmington and Husson traded baskets throughout the early minutes until Caitlyn Butterfield hit an open jumper to push the Eagle lead to 11-8.  A big three-point shot by Jillian Ross cut the Husson lead to 2 at 19-17 with 9:50 remaining in the first half.  Ross hit another three to give the Beavers a 20-19 lead followed immediately by a turnover forced by Farmington and another trey for Holly Oliver for a 23-19 lead for Farmington.  A Marisa Albert three point shot reclaimed the Eagle lead at 24-23 with 6:09 left in the half.

The second half ended with a 37-29 Husson advantage.  Noelle Lincoln and Kelli Murray led the Eagles with 7 points apiece, followed by Caitlyn Butterfield with 6 points.  Kenni Norton led the charge for the Beavers with 8 points, followed by an even spread of six points from Paige Saunders and Jillian Ross.

Paige Saunders' layup brought the Beavers to within two points of Husson at 49-47 with 10:30 left in second half.  Marissa Albert hit her second three-point shot of the night to extend the Eagle lead to 52-47.  Ross hit a baseline jumper to dial the score to 52-49 with 8:01 left in the game.  Bethany Sevey hit back-to-back three point shots to push the Eagle led to 64-54 with 3:53 left in the game.  The deficit proved insurmountable for the Beavers and the game ended with a 73-61 Husson victory.

Maine Farmington's Paige Saunders put up a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.  Kenni Norton tallied 16 points followed by Ashley Busque with 15 Beaver points.

Kelli Murray paced the Eagles with her double-double effort of 16 points and 13 rebounds.  Sevey contributed 13 points to the Husson win, followed by Marissa Albert with 11.  In her return to the court, Bri Hanscom pulled down 7 rebounds and scored two points.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday, February 19 with a 4:00 contest against Thomas while Maine Farmington travels to Maine Maritime for their Saturday contest.

The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. The late Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, served as the catalyst for the initiative after her third reoccurrence of breast cancer in 2006.  Overall, the WBCA Pink Zone has raised nearly $3.3 Million, has reached almost 2.7 Million fans, and has unified over 4,700 participants in only four years.
