Box Score Bangor, ME - The University of Maine-Farmington Beavers defeated the Husson Field Hockey team 2-0 at a sun-drenched Winkin Complex. With the loss Husson falls to 7-4, and a 3-3 record in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC). UMF improves to 6-4 with the win (4-1 NAC).
Husson was on the attack for the majority of game, outshooting the Beavers 28-4 and leading UMF 27-3 in the penalty corners column. Lori Hiltz (Norridgewock, ME) put 5 of her game-high 7 shots on net, but her and the rest of the Eagles' attackers were unable to break through for a score.
Farmington was able to earn the victory in large part because of tremendous goalkeeping from first year goalie Curran Brierley (East Hampton, NY). Brierly was able to stand in front of the storm and continuously kept the ball out of the cage, recording 21 saves to earn the shutout victory.
Both UMF scores came off the stick of Lily Barry (Hermon, ME) and were both assisted by Kashley Weymouth (Pittston, ME). Barry potted the first just a minute in the game, when a Weymouth pass found her near the top of the circle, and Barry blasted it into the boards to put Farmington up 1-0.
With about a minute and a half left in the first, Barry scored from Weymouth in an eerily similar play that beat the Husson defense, and gave the Beavers a 2-0 lead going into the break.
The Eagles fought until the final horn, and continued to pepper the Beaver keeper, but Brierley held strong and the score would go final.
Husson returns to action on Tuesday when they host in-state rival and New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foe Colby College for a 6:00 pm start. UMF takes on a Maine NESCAC team as well when they travel to Brunswick, ME to take on Bowdoin College at 6:00 pm on Wednesday.
