Box Score Castleton, VT - Kealy Chipman (Bellows Falls, VT) and Blake Wardwell (Bridgewater, VT) each scored a pair of goals to lead the Castleton State College field hockey team to a 4-2 win over visiting Husson University in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action Sunday afternoon at Spartan Stadium. The win put the finishing touches on Castleton's first unblemished conference season in program history, as the Spartans moved to 11-7 overall, 9-0 in NAC play.
Chipman put the Spartans on top early, converting her 19th goal of the season just 1:34 into the contest. Rachel Preusser (Craryville, NY) carried the ball into the striking circle, drawing out Husson goalie Kristen Capen (Leeds, ME) then played a perfect centering pass to Chipman who stuffed it into the open goalmouth.
Wardwell gave Castleton a 3-0 lead with a pair of put-backs midway through the half. Chipman blasted an initial shot on cage that was deftly turned away by Capen, but Wardwell gathered the rebound and scored at the 16:41 mark. Two minutes later Chipman once again fired on goal, where Husson defender Annika Durrell (Livermore, ME) made a defensive save that bounced to Wardwell who finished.
Mariah Arno (Dover-Foxcroft, ME) cut the deficit to 3-1, potting her 20th goal of the season at the 21:47 mark. Sabrina Vaillancourt (Newport, ME) sent in the initial shot and Arno deflected it past Castleton goalie Bridget Dusha (Greenwich, NY).
Chipman pushed the lead to 4-1 with 20 minutes left in the contest, sending home her 20th goal off a rebound. Preusser had the initial crack at it, but Capen turned her away only to see Chipman recover and send it home.
Vaillancourt cut the lead in half with less than 10 minutes remaining in the contest, sending home a Kara Poirer (Berlin, NH) assist to round out the scoring.
Castleton was on Capen early and often, firing 24 total shots, including 21 on cage. Capen was outstanding, coming up with 17 saves to keep the Eagles in the game throughout.
Dusha finished with just two saves, but controlled the circle, clearing away several attempts by would-be scorers, and the Spartan defense did the rest keeping her clean for much of the game.
Husson finishes the regular season at 8-8, (4-5 NAC) and will await tournament pairings for a quarterfinal opponent in Saturday's contest. Castleton has a date with RPI on Thursday at 7:00 pm to round out its regular season. The Spartans will own the top-seed in the upcoming NAC tournament, and await pairings for an opponent in Saturday's quarterfinal round.
