Mules Stave Off Eagle Comeback on Senior Day

Box Score

Bangor, ME - The Husson field hockey team scored a pair of goals down the stretch to cut into their 3-0 early deficit, but there wasn't enough time left to complete their comeback and they fell to visiting Colby College 3-2 at a wild Winkin Complex this evening. With the win, the Mules improved to 2-7 while the Eagles drop to 7-5 in the defeat.

The Mules started out with control of the game, besting Husson in shots (19-3), and penalty corners (6-1) in the first half. Lauren Zion (Beverly, MA) slapped a Kelly Roth (South Deerfield, MA) ball out of the air that made its way into the back of the net, and the Mules would take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

It appeared to be more of the same in the second half, when Colby got a pair of goals as opportunistic sophomore Charlotte Deavers (Huntington Bay, NY) potted two loose balls in the first 5 minutes of the second half sent in by Courtney Erskine (Turner, ME) [32:45] and Caroline Chessare (Hopkinton, ME) [30:30] to stretch the Mule lead to 3-0.

With 29 minutes remaining, and facing a 3-0 challenge, Husson head coach Jen Johnstone called a timeout, and pulled her team in tight. A different looking team came out of the huddle, as the Eagles led the second half stats in shots (11-10) and penalty corners (9-3).

Sabrina Vaillancourt (Newport, ME) inserted a corner with just under 15 minutes left to play, and found senior Lorri Hiltz (Norridgewock, ME) who blasted a shot near the top of the arc that found the back of the cage and got Husson on the scoreboard.

Seven minutes later it was Vaillancourt's turn to put a tally on the scoreboard when she took a ball left behind by Samantha Blanchard (Corinth, ME) and blasted it by the goalie to bring the Eagles to within one.

The clock would run out before Husson could complete their comeback, and the score went final, 3-2. Colby goalkeeper Michelle Burt (Woodbridge, CT) made 5 saves to earn her second win of the season while her counterpart Kristen Capen (Leeds, ME) turned in a stellar performance, making 13 saves despite taking the loss.

This was the final home game of the 2011 regular season for Husson, and the team took the opportunity to honor Hiltz and Kajsa Blindow (Morgan, VT) for their 4 years of service to the Eagle field hockey program. To read the Senior Day program insert, click here.

Husson returns to action this Saturday when they travel to Boston to take on NAC rival Simmonds College for a 1:00 pm start. Colby returns home to Waterville this weekend to take on a pair of NESCAC foes in Amherst College at 11:00 am start on Saturday, and Hamilton College at noon on Sunday.
