Box Score Bangor, ME - The Husson University Field Hockey team won their homecoming game against Thomas College, as the Eagles defeated the Terriers 3-2 with a last minute goal off the stick of Mariah Arno (Dover-Foxcroft, ME) coming with 1:02 left. The Eagles hold an overall record of 7-2 with a conference record of 3-1, while the Terriers fall to a 4-7 overall record with a conference record of 2-2.
Both teams jumped off to a quick start with the Eagles scoring 3:22 into the game and the Terriers answering with a goal of their own just 58 seconds later. The Eagles held pressure on the Terriers all night with 14 shots on goal.
The Eagles were led by Arno, Lori Hiltz (Norridgewock, ME), and
Sabrina Vaillancourt (Newport, ME) who all found the back of the cage on a rainy night in Bangor.
The teams went into halftime with a 1-1 tie; Husson opened the second half strong, registering 14 shots before Hiltz snuck one by Thomas goalie Sofia Sourgiadakis (Littleton, NH). Husson led the game with 25 total shots and 14 on goal, while Thomas had 5 total shots with 4 on goal.
Sourgiadkis, had a solid night in front of the cage, coming away with 11 saves. Ali Kriegel (Winslow, Me) and Ally Kennedy (Winthrop, ME) each registered goals for the Terriers. Kennedy's goal, assisted by Kriegel, tied the game at 2 with 3:08 left in the second half.
Kristen Capen (Leeds, ME), Husson Goalie had a pretty quiet night, 2 saves and 2 goals against. Despite the goals against, Capen extends her record to 6-1 while Sourgiadkis takes the loss and falls to 3-7 on the season.
Husson head coach Jen Johnstone stated after the game, "It was great to see such strong effort from top to bottom in the second half to achieve this win. We stressed effort at halftime and the team really pulled together".
The Eagles return to action on Wednesday, October 5th at 4:00 pm when they travel to St. Joseph's College. The Terriers take the field again on Wednesday, October 5th at the University of Farmington; game time is 4:00 pm.
