Eagles Victorious 2-1 in Overtime

Box Score

The Husson University women's soccer team played their third overtime match of the season Wednesdsay night, and with it, picked up their third overtime victory. The Eagles beat the Bates Bobcats 2-1, improving their record to 7-4 on the season while the Bobcats fall to 2-3-1 on the season.\

While both teams seemed to be evenly matched, the Bobcats would score first in the sixteenth minute on a goal by Tina Tobin, (JR, Lowell, MA) from an assist from Meridith Poore, (SR, Duxbury, MA). The match remained 1-0 nearly the entire game with both teams unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities. In the sixty fifth minute, the Bobcats were denied a scoring opportunity when Eagles Goalkeer, Rozlyn Peterson, (JR, Newport, ME) came out to make a save, and the ball landed at the feet of Sam Alper, (JR, Holliston, MA). Alper fired a shot on goal and with Peterson off her line, Katelyn Cloutier (JR, Groveton, NH) headed the ball off the goal line.

With two minutes left in regulation, Husson's Alex Laniewski, (JR, Scarborough, ME) found the back of the of the Bates net with her sixth goal of the season. Caitlyn Butterfield, (SR, Gorham, ME) drove a free kick into the box, which was won by Katie McLaughlin, (JR, Winslow, ME). Laniewski received the pass from McLaughlin, and scored to send the game into overtime. Laniewski once again found the back of the net in extra minutes off a pass from Megan Clement, (SR, Brunswick, ME).

The goal marked Laniewski's team leading seventh goal of the season. Head Coach Keith Bosley said he was impressed with his team's ability to play hard, despite being behind most of the game.  “One of the most outstanding attributes of our team is that they don't get discouraged when they are down,” said Bosley. “They have forced three overtimes this year after falling behind, and pulled off three wins.”

Husson tallied 21 shots to Bates' 19 on the game.  Annie Burns (Topsfield, MA) tallied 11 saves on the loss while Petersen recorded 11 saves for Husson.

The Husson Univeristy women's soccer team will return to action this Satuday at home against the Maine Maritime Mariners in a Homecoming North Atlantic Conference match. The game is set to start at 11:00 AM.  Bates next faces Tufts on October 2 at 12:00 PM.
