Late Surge Lifts Bowdoin Over Husson

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Minutes away from their second-straight loss to open the season, the Bowdoin College women's soccer team scored twice in the final 10:10 to rally past Husson University on Wednesday afternoon in Brunswick, 2-1. The Polar Bears improve to 1-1-0 this year while the Eagles fall to 3-3-0.

Bowdoin controlled the pace of play from the outset, but could not get the ball past Husson netminder Rozlyn Peterson, who made eight first-half saves to force a scoreless tie heading into intermission.

Despite being outshot 9-1 in the opening stanza, it was the  Eagles who broke into the scoring column first, as Michelle Manning lofted a shot from the left wing to the far corner of the goal at 60:42 to give the visitors a one-goal lead.

The Eagles managed to keep the Polar Bears at bay for the ensuing 20 minutes, but a sustained possession resulted a handful of solid chances in succession for Bowdoin. The ball appeared to be cleared out of the zone by the Husson defenders, but Bowdoin first-year Becky Stoneham ripped a shot from 25 yards out that skimmed under the crossbar to tie the score with just 10:10 remaining.

Bowdoin continued to apply the pressure and were rewarded less than six minutes later as a cross by Celeste Swain was deflected by Peterson to the waiting boot of Bowdoin's Casey Blossom, who deposited it into the net with 4:55 remaining to clinch the win.

Kat Flaherty made four saves for the Polar Bears while Peterson ended with 14 for Husson. Bowdoin held an 18-7 edge in shots and 8-1 advantage in corner kicks for the game.
