(Portland, ME) threw eight innings
allowing just two runs (both earned) in game one and Ken Cook

one-and-one-third innings of scoreless relief. The Spartans move
to 26-12 overall on the season and 14-2 in the NEAC
East. The Eagles move to 21-17 overall and 12-4 in NEAC East
play.
By winning game two, Castleton also earned the right to host the
NEAC
East double elimination tournament from April 30 to May 2. The
four-team
field will be comprised of #1 Castleton, #2 Husson, #3 Thomas and
#4
Lyndon State. Game times will be made available later in the
week.
In game one, Arsenault gave up seven hits, walked three and struck
out
three for the complete game win. Castleton starter Brandon Fay
(So.
Burlington, VT) was dealt the no decision on three innings
pitched,
three hits, one earned run, two walks and no strikeouts. Tyler
Erickson
(Naugatuck, CT) suffered the loss pitching five innings, allowing
two
earned on four hits, two walks and six strikeouts.
Husson opened up the scoring in the top of the third as Cody
Haverly-Johndro (Newport, ME) was hit by a pitch to lead off the
frame.
Haverly-Johndro advanced to second on a fielder's choice and
to third
on a wild pitch before Ethan Guerette (Wales, ME) plated him with
a
single down the right field line for a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Erickson entered the contest with
runners on
first and second and no outs. Jake Arthers (Belfast, ME) reached
on a
fielder's choice but Tom Crews (Bangor, ME) was thrown out
at second
base by Spartans third baseman David Brandt (Contoocook, NH) for
the
force out. With runners on the corners, Kevin Rennick (Lincoln,
RI)
dropped down a bunt for the safety squeeze but Erickson threw out
Chase
Daniels (Brewer, ME) at home to prevent the run from scoring.
Erickson
forced Haverly-Johndro out at second base to end the frame.
Castleton responded in the bottom of the fourth as Ted Mills
(Stockbridge, VT) lined a single to center field scoring Matt
Eisenhuth
(Townshend, VT) to even the score at 1-1.
Mills gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth with
a
sacrifice fly to center field plating Eisenhuth for a 2-1 gap.
The Eagles answered back in the seventh as Haverly-Johndro was hit
by a
pitch to leadoff the inning. Kyle Vanidestine (Bangor, ME) reached
on a
fielder's choice bunt but Haverly-Johndro was retired at
second.
Gurette followed with an RBI double to deep center field making it
2-2.
In the top of the eighth with the bases loaded, Haverly-Johndro
lifted
a fly-ball to center field for a sacrifice fly scoring Daniels to
take a
3-2 lead.
The Spartans rally fell short in the bottom half as Ryan
Zielinski
(Schenectady, NY) notched a leadoff base hit, and Jack
Lancelin
(Chatham, NY) followed with a bunt single down the third base
line. But
Arsenault got Billy Manley (Lowell, MA) to fly out to center
and
Eisenhuth grounded into a 4-3 double play to end the game.
In game two, Billy Sisko (Weathersfield, VT) earned the win
throwing
five-and-two-thirds innings scattering five hits, allowing one
run
(unearned), four walks and four strikeouts. Kyle Leeman (Bangor,
ME) was
handed the loss tossing six innings, allowing three runs (one
earned) on
four hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
Husson cracked the scoreboard first in top of the third as
Vanidestine
scored on a throwing error to make it 1-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, Castleton took the lead as Cameron
Curler
(Vergennes, VT) notched an RBI ground out and Garrett
Bissonnette
(Lyman, ME) scored on a wild pitch from Leeman for the 2-0
advantage.
The Spartans added an insurance run in the fifth as Zielinski led
off
with a walk, and Lancelin doubled to right field. After Manley
grounded
out to third, Bissonnette was hit by a pitch to load the
bases.
Eisenhuth hit a slow roller to second base but broke up the double
play
at first to score Zielinski from third.
In the top of the sixth, Manley robbed Chris Maguire (Bucksport,
ME) in
the left center field gap making a diving catch to deny Maguire of
an
extra base hit and a potential Husson rally. With two outs, the
Eagles
loaded the bases but Cook, who earned a complete-game victory in
game
one of yesterday's twin-bill, relieved Sisko and forced
Haverly-Johndro into an inning ending ground out to second.
Cook finished off Husson in the top of the seventh with a 1-2-3
inning
to secure the win, the regular season NEAC East title and the
right to
host the NEAC East tournament.
