Spartans Outlast Eagles

Husson University fell to Castleton 55-51 at Husson's Winkin Complex on Saturday, October 23.  Castleton's Shane Brozowski passed for 458 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Spartans to victory.  Husson's Justin Lindie paced the Eagles with five rushing touchdowns and 253 yards on the loss. 

Castleton reached the scoreboard four minutes into the first quarter when Brozowski kept the football for a seven yard rushing touchdown.  On the ensuing drive, Lindie rushed for twenty-seven yards and followed with a seven yard touchdown rush.  Lee Gustin's kick attempt was successful to even the score at 7-7.

Castleton answered with another scoring drive that featured a twenty four yard pass to Brandon Boyle.  Another Brozowski pass to Evan Cassidy was good for a twelve yard touchdown, pushing the Castleton lead to 14-7. 

The scoring continued on the next drive when Husson's Byron Jackson rushed for thirty yards, setting up Lindie for another four yard rushing touchdown.  Following the extra point, the score was again tied, this time at 14-14.  Castleton once again answered when Brozowski scored on the quarterback keeper to give the Spartans a 21-14 lead, following the successful kick by Luis Robitaille. 

In the beginning of the second quarter, the Eagles' quarterback, Jack Hersom, connected with receiver Desmond Nutter for a twenty-one yard pass that set up an eleven yard rushing touchdown by Byron Jackson.  Castleton blocked the point-after-touchdown attempt and recovered the football but fumbled in the end zone.  The Eagles recovered the ball in the end zone, earning the two point conversion for a 22-21 lead.

Equal to the task, Castleton scored on the next drive, paced by Tyler Carpenter who rushed for twenty-six yards to set up a Brozowski fifteen-yard touchdown pass to Adam Farmer.  Castleton would reclaim the lead at 28-22.

The Spartans forced a Husson turnover on downs, the first in the game in the second quarter.  Brozowski connected with Cassidy who broke open and ran for the sixty-three yard touchdown, pushing the Spartan lead to 34-22.  A fumble on the point after touchdown kept the Castleton lead to twelve points.

Jackson rushed for sixty Husson yards on the next drive, setting Justin Lindie up for a fifteen yard rushing touchdown to up the score to 34-29, with Husson trailing, following the extra point.

Brozowski completed two passes to Carpenter for fifty-nine yards, setting up the Brozowski four yard rushing touchdown.  Castleton extended their lead to 41-29 with the successful extra point.  The first half closed with Castleton leading 41-29.

At the start of the third quarter, Lindie carried the ball for three possessions and seventy-three yards, including a sixty yard rushing touchdown to bring the Eagles within five points of the Spartans at 41-36. 

With just under five minutes left in the third quarter, Kyle Vanidestine forced and recovered a fumble that would set up Husson's next scoring drive.  A sixty-six yard pass from Husson to Tyler Pembroke gave the Eagles a 43-41 lead over the Spartans with 2:09 left in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter began with a quick Husson turnover on downs, forced by the Spartans defense.  Castleton strung together an eleven play drive that featured costly Husson penalties.  Carpenter scored a Castleton touchdown with a two yard rush, pushing the score to 48-43.

Husson answered on the following drive that featured a forty-eight yard rush by quarterback Jack Hersom to the Castleton twenty-three.  Another rushing touchdown by Lindie, this time for seventeen yards was followed by a successful two-point conversion rush, again by Lindie.  Husson reclaimed the lead at 51-48 with 5:54 left in the fourth quarter.

After forcing a turnover of downs, Husson fumbled on their own forty-yard-line.  Castleton's Brandon Bergeron forced the fumble that was recovered by Spartan, Cody Tancreti at the Husson thirty-nine-yard line. 

With 3:12 left on the clock, Castleton began their last scoring drive of the game.  Carpenter rushed for nineteen yards, two of those yards for a Spartans touchdown.  Following the Robitaille extra point, the Spartans claimed a 55-41 lead with forty-nine seconds left in the game.

Reduced to third down and ten yards to go, Husson's Hersom completed a thirty-seven yard pass to Travis Barnies who was tackled at the Castleton twenty-five-yard line with seconds left on the clock.  A Hersom pass was tipped and intercepted by Tancreti as time expired. 

The game ended with a 55-51 Castleton victory.  With the win, the Spartans improve to 4-3 on the season while the Eagles fall to 1-7.

Brozowski lead the Spartans with 458 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Cassidy caught two touchdowns for 217 yards.  Defensively, Dustin Young recorded 10 tackles while Bergeron tallied one forced fumble and a sack.

Justin Lindie paced the Eagles with 253 rushing yards and five touchdowns, followed by 170 rushing yards and one touchdown by Byron JacksonJack Hersom passed for 150 yards and one touchdown.

The Eagles return to action on October 30 when they host Mount Ida for a 1:00 kickoff.  Castleton hosts Becker on 10/30 with a 12:00 game.
