Box Score WATERVILLE, Maine --- Michael Russell (Wellesley, Mass.) had his
sixth double-double in 10 games with 10 points and 16 rebounds as
the Colby College men's basketball team held on for a 56-54 win
over Husson University on Thursday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
Colby (8-2) took a 34-19 halftime lead after shooting 52 percent
from the field in the opening 20 minutes. However, Husson (5-4)
held the Mules to 29 percent shooting in the second half and nearly
came all the way back for the victory.
Gil Haylon (Wellesley, Mass.) added 11 points and nailed three
3-point shots for the Mules. Christian Van Loenen (Falmouth, Maine)
had five points and six rebounds, while Justin Sherman (Piedmont,
Calif.) dished six assists and had three steals.
Jay Uhrin (Winterport, Maine) paced the Eagles with 19 points
and five steals. Brock Bradford (Kenduskeag, Maine) added 12 points
and Marc Zaharchuk (Richmond, Maine) came off the bench with seven
points and 13 rebounds. Joshua Jones (Jefferson, Maine) added nine
points and three steals.
Husson led 10-8 with 11:12 left in the first half only to see
the Mules use a 26-9 run to take a 34-19 lead at the break. Colby
led by as much as 37-22 with two minutes gone in the second half,
but Husson used a 12-0 run to make it 37-34 with 13:58 to play. The
Mules never relinquished the lead and pulled away to a 53-45 margin
with 2:51 to play. The Eagles cut the lead to three points at 53-50
and had the chance to tie the game on a 3-point shot with 38
seconds left. The Eagles missed and Choice went 3-for-4 from the
foul line for Colby's final points.
Husson head coach Warren Caruso was denied his 300th
career victory. He stands at 299-143 in 16 years with the Eagles.
The Eagles take the court again on Tuesday, January 12th at 5:30
pm vs. Thomas College in a rematch of the 2009 NAC championship
game.
