Box Score Bangor, ME: The Husson Women's basketball team
improved to 5-8 (2-0 in NAC) after holding off Maine Maritime of
Castine Friday night 71-62. The Eagles were led by the strong play
of Shelby Bradford (Sr. Lee, ME) who
finished the first home conference matchup with 21 points and 17
rebounds. Bradford also shot 7-9 from the charity stripe in 33
minutes.
The Eagles fell early to a 13-8 Mariner lead at the 15:18 mark
of the 1st half with strong play from MMA's Sam
Goda (So. Eliot, ME), though Husson would play hard and
control the rest of the half. Husson would take their first
lead of the game with 10:28 to go in the 1st on a 3
point jumper from Amanda Gifford (So. Lee, ME) and
would not relinquish the lead the rest of the game. In the final
7:46 of the 1st Husson would outscore Maine Maritime
14-1 and take a 41-26 lead into the half.
The Mariner women would not roll over, however, coming out of
the locker room with a 12-0 run in the first 5:30 of the
2nd half. The Eagles would get 2nd half
contributions from across the board and push their lead back to 14
with 8:12 to go only to see it fall to a 3 point deficit with 3:10
left in the contest. Bradford would score a couple of baskets and
an and-one in the final minutes to keep the Mariners at bay pushing
the lead to 9 as the Eagles took the 71-62 victory.
Goda finished with 14 points and 11 boards for Maine Maritime as
Gifford had 13 and 8 rebounds along with Brianna Hanscom's
(So. Mattawamkeag, ME) 13 and 7.
The Eagles improved to 5-8 on the season and 2-0 now in NAC
play, as the Mariners fall to 6-6 and 1-1 in the NAC. Both teams
will play their next game on Tuesday, January 19th at
7:30 with Maine Maritime at Thomas and Husson at U. Maine
Farmington.
