Box Score
LEWISTON, Maine -- Husson University came from behind with two
second-half goals to defeat the Bates College women's soccer team
2-1 in a rainy non-conference game on Wednesday at Russell Street
Field. The Eagles moved to 7-3 on the season, while the
Bobcats fell to 2-3-1 overall.
Megan Clement's (Jr., Brunswisk, ME) open-net goal in the 72nd
minute, following the rebound of a lunging save by Bates goalie
Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.), was the game-winner for Husson.
Bates got on the board first in the 41st minute, when sophomore
Alix Vandeventer (North Attleboro, Mass.) sent a cross from the
right wing into the Husson penalty box, where sophomore Sam Alper
(Holliston, Mass.) reached the ball and poked it past a Husson
defender and Husson goalie Jen Plourde (Sr., Howland, ME) for a 1-0
lead. Bates kept that lead going into the second half,
although the Eagles outshot the Bobcats 8-3 in the half.
Although there were many scoring chances by both teams in the
second half, only Husson was able to convert. In the 63rd minute,
the Eagles tied the game up at 1-1, when sophomore Amanda Gifford
(So., Lee, ME) knocked in a long rebound of a Burns save, off a
shot by Shelby Bradford (Sr., Lee, ME), from about 20 yards away.
Nine minutes later, with 18:58 left in regulation, Husson
advanced the ball up the field on a long run up the left wing by
Alexandra Laniewski (So., Scarborough, ME). Laniewski's cross
found Bradford with only Burns to beat from inside the box. Burns
lunged to punch away Bradford's shot, but the carom headed
Clement's way with an open net in front of her. Plourde made
four saves and Burns made nine, as Husson outshot Bates 25-14 in
the game.
