Bobcats Take Bunyan Trophy With Win Over Eagles; MacKenzie Scores 1000th Point

Bangor, ME - Husson University fell to Bates 75-63 in the Championship game of the Paul Bunyan Invitational.  Bates improves to 5-1 with the win while Husson falls to 3-3.  Bates' Chris Wilson (Sr., Brewer, ME) was named the Paul Bunyan Invitational Tournament MVP.  Despite the loss, Husson's Matt MacKenzie (Sr., Warren, ME) recorded his 1000th point by fighting through thick coverage to make a driving layup in the second half.

Josh Jones (So, Jefferson, ME) put the eagles on the board first from under the basket.  Bates answered with a shot in the lane by Ryan Weston (So., Bangor, ME) to tie the game at 2-2.  MacKenzie grabed a rebound for the lay up to put Husson up 4-2.  In a half where the lead would continually change, Bates' Jimmy O'Keefe (Sr., Lexington, MA) was fouled and hit both shots to tie the game at 8 in the first five minutes.

Jay Uhrin (Jr., Winterport, ME) hit both of his foul shots to put the eagles up 18-16 but Bates' Brian Ellis (Jr., Braintree, MA) answered with a layup to knot the score at 18.  CJ Hodges (Sr., Glen Mills, PA) made 2 of 3 foul shots to give the Eagles a 20-18 lead over the Bobcats.  Bates' Ryan Weston (So., Bangor, ME) pushed through the lane to score a layup that was answered by Husson's Marc Zaharchuk for a 22-20 Eagles score.  CJ Hodges (Sr., Glen Mills, PA) hit a deuce from Matt Cummings (Sr., Howland, ME) for 26-24 Husson lead.  Cummings hit one of two foul shots to give the Eagles a three point lead but Bobcat Kyle Philbrook (So., Auburn, ME) converted off a steal to bring the game within one point.  Bates' Wilson made another steal running the floor and scoring a lay up to take a 28-27 lead.  Husson's MacKenzie scored one of two foul shots to tie the game at 28 with 2 minutes left.  Bates hit two foul shots to take a two point lead at 30-28 but Husson's Brock Bradford (Sr., Kenduskeag, ME) hit a big three to reclaim the Husson lead at 31-30 to end the first half.

Bates got on the board first in the second half when Ellis hit his foul shots putting the Bobcats up 33-31.  A spinning fade-away by Weston gave Bates a four point lead and then Philbrook hit a three to make the score 38-31.  Bates pulled away with Weston hitting a lay up to gain a 9 point lead.  Uhrin responded with a jumper with Husson trailing 35-42.  After numerous Eagle turnovers, Bates' O'Keefe hit a jump shot to give the Bobcats a 13 point lead.  Husson's Bradford hit a deep three to bring the Eagles to 44-53 and Bates' Wilson hit another three from the courtside to push the score to 44-56.  Bradford responded with another three of his own to make it 49-56.  Despite a late surge, the Eagles could not catch the Bobcats and the game ended at 63-75.

Bates' Chris Wilson was named the Paul Bunyan Invitational Tournament MVP scoring 21 points and shooting 15-21.  Brian Ellis was also named to the All-Tournament Team scoring 19 points and collecting 8 rebounds.  Bates was 18-22 from the free throw line to Husson's 17-28.

Husson's Brock Bradford and Matt MacKenzie were named to the All-Tournament Team.  Bradford netted 15 points and MacKenzie collected his 1000th career point in his 13 point effort.  Uhrin totaled 17 points and Jones collected 11 rebounds on the loss.
