Penalty Stroke Propels Eagles Past Bobcats 2-1

Box Score

Bangor, Maine - Husson University scored the game winning goal against Bates College on a penalty stoke with 1:55 remaining in the second half.  With the win the Eagles improve to 6-7 and the Bobcats fall to 1-11.  Husson returns to action on October 31 when they host Lasell College in the first round of the North Atlantic Conference Tournament.  Game time is set for 3:30 PM at the Winkin Complex.

In a closely matched first half the Eagles and Bobcats had 8 shots apiece.  Bates provided early offensive pressure in the first five minutes of the game with a flurry of shots on Husson 's goal.  The Eagles notched their first goal of the game 7:15 into the first half off a Courtney Allen (Jr., Gardiner, ME) corner.  Allen served the corner to a waiting Jenika Kelley (Sr., Livermore Falls, ME) at the top of the circle.  Kelley passed  to Helen Berry (Jr., Belfast, ME) who drove the ball into the back of the Bobcats' cage.

Bates tied the game at 1-1 in the second half with a goal by Jenna Dannis (So., Milford, NH) off a Kelly McManus (So., Plymouth, NH) corner.  Dannis scored with a strike from the top left of the circle that ricocheted off Kristen Capen's (Fy., Leeds, ME) pad and into the Husson cage 61:40 into the game.

Shortly following the goal, Bates goalkeeper Helen Turner (Sr., Manchester, MA) made a huge save shutting down a Jillian Morin breakaway.  Moments later, with 1:55 left in the game, a penalty stroke was awarded to the Eagles.  Husson's Lori Hiltz (So., Norridgewock, ME) scored off a low shot to the corner of the Bobcats goal.  Bates rallied and Zoe Donaldson (Jr., Bronxville, NY) took a menacing final shot with 39 seconds left on the clock.  Husson's Kristen Capen (Fy, Leeds , ME) made the save deflecting Donaldson's laser off her pad.

Husson recorded 19 shots to Bates' 20 shots on the game.   Goalkeepers for both teams made numerous key saves to keep their respective teams alive.  Bates' Katie McEnroe (Jr., Hockessin, DE) recorded 3 saves and Helena Turner  recorded five saves.  Husson's Kristen Capen notched 9 saves on the win.
