Box Score Newton, Mass.- Jillian Morin (Manchester, ME) produced five
points for Husson University en route to a 5-1 victory over the
Lasell College field hockey team in North Atlantic Conference play
today on Grellier Field. Both the Eagles and the Lasers
are now even with a 3-3 league record.
Husson dictated the flow of the game from the start, outshooting
the Lasers 14-2 in the first half, and 23-11 throughout the seventy
minutes.
Within the first six minutes of the contest, the Eagles took
advantage of both shooting chances they received. Morin stole
away first, carrying the ball from midfield to just one step within
the arc, drilling a goal from the left side of the field.
Just two minutes later, Morin assisted on the Eagles insurance goal
which was scored by Helen Berry (Belfast, ME), at 5:11.
Husson followed up those shots with a handful of opportunities in a
sequence of consecutive shots with three penalty corners within a
one minute span. However, Lasell's defense and goalkeeper Christine
Thornton (Canton, Mass.) turned away the attempts without another
score.
Skye Ellis (Belfast, ME) attempted to pull the Eagles ahead further
in the 19th minute after intercepting a Lasell pass to breakaway
for a 1-on-1 chance with Thornton. On Ellis' first attempt,
Thornton stifled the shot as she rushed Ellis with a sliding
save. Ellis received a second chance off the deflection,
which was stopped this time by Tiffany Potter (Rochdale, Mass.)
with a defensive save in the Lasers' backfield.
Before the halftime break, two more Husson athletes scored to give
the visitors a 4-0 edge. Emily Woodbury (Burnham, ME) and
Morin scored within 20 seconds of each other in the 28th minute,
lengthening the gap between the NAC rivals.
Lasell stepped up their energy in the second half producing nine
shots, equal to the same number of shots as the Eagles. The
Lasers also received six penalty corner opportunities in the second
stanza to Husson's three. Unfortunately for the Lasers,
Husson's goalkeeper Kristen Capen (Leeds, ME) turned away four shot
attempts, allowing just one goal to slip by her at 54:50.
The play started with Sarah Jannuzzi (Glen, NH) who knocked a
penalty corner to Tia Pratt (S. Paris, ME) at the top of the arc.
With just one step around a defender, Pratt was able to shoot point
blank on the goal to get the Lasers on the board.
Husson's last goal was scored just one minute prior to Pratt's by
sophomore midfielder Lorri Hiltz (Norridgewock, ME).
The Eagles leave with a 4-7 record, while the Lasers end the day at
7-9. Lasell faces another NAC opponent, Saint Joseph's
College of Maine, tomorrow, October 25th at 3:00 p.m., on Grellier
Field.
