Football Trips Up Norwich 25-19

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Julius Williams carried the ball 34 times for 180 yards and two touchdowns to lead Husson to a 25-19 victory over Norwich in a non-conference football game Saturday afternoon at Sabine Field.

Norwich was led by senior WR Nate Stroffoleno, who caught seven passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Senior RB Darnell Jackson paced the Cadets on the ground, rushing for 73 yards on 18 carries. Sophomore QB Guerschom Jean-Gilles completed 14-of-29 passes for 183 yards and two scores, while junior QB Chris Gilding came in off the bench and completed 5-of-10 passes for 61 yards and a touchdown.

Husson (2-1) built a 25-6 fourth quarter lead, and then had to hold on as the Cadets staged a rally. After a scoreless first quarter, Williams got the Eagles on the scoreboard early in the second quarter as the junior ran for a 20-yard touchdown.

Norwich (2-1) responded on its next possession, marching 57 yards in nine plays to score its first points of the day. Jean-Gilles hooked up with Stroffoleno on a 12-yard pass to cap the drive. Stroffoleno hauled in the reception, despite being interfered with, in the back left corner of the end zone. NU's extra point attempt was missed, and the Cadets trailed 7-6 with 10:18 to play in the frame.

Husson came right back on its next possession, driving 78 yards in seven plays to extend its lead to 13-6. Williams finished off the drive with a 26-yard touchdown run. Norwich blocked the extra point attempt, to keep the deficit at just seven points with 6:55 to play in the second.

Husson kicker Darren Gauthier tacked on a 28-yard field goal late in the second quarter as the Eagles carried a 16-6 lead into halftime.

Gauthier provided the only scoring of the third quarter, as he booted a 31-yard field goal to extend Husson's lead to 19-6. The Eagles established their largest lead of the afternoon early in the fourth quarter as James Dobson caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from James McCandles.

Norwich refused to go down without a fight, however, rallying with a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns. The Cadets' surge began as Jean-Gilles hit Stroffoleno with a 22-yard touchdown pass. Then, Gilding hooked up with sophomore WR Emilio Martinez on a 14-yard scoring pass to pull NU to within six points with 8:49 to play.

The Cadets had two more possessions, but they were unable to penetrate Husson territory on either one.

Senior LB Jim Kiritsy, junior DB Donovan Brown and sophomore LB Jason Spring led the NU defense with 12 tackles apiece. The NU defense, which entered the game ranked tied for first in the NCAA in takeaways, forced three turnovers in this game. The Cadets have now collected 14 turnovers in three games.
