Jim Karcanes

Coach Karcanes grew-up in Warsaw, New York and began his running career while in elementary school on his school’s 5th grade cross country team.  Coach Karcanes’ love for competition lead him to eventually compete in cross country, wrestling and track all four years of high school where he was captain and MVP of all three teams.  He received honors as the Class B New York State Cross Country Champion, and eventually went  to run NCAA Division I cross country and track at the University of South Carolina earning All-Metro Conference honors in cross country and setting the freshmen record in the 5000m(14:41).

After college Coach Karcanes enlisted in the U.S. Army and eventually earned a commission as an officer in 1997.  During his 16 years of active service, Coach Karcanes has served as team captain for multiple Army races and lead intense physical training programs for soldiers and future officers. He commanded four separate Army units and has conducted two combat tours to Iraq and one peace keeping operation to Bosnia-Herzegovina. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Military Science and Executive Officer for both Husson and the University of Maine Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC).

Karcanes holds a Masters of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Houghton College in New York.  He is currently a graduate student in the University of Maine’s Physical Education program. Coach Karcanes is a Personal Trainer and a member of USATF and Sub5 track club of Brewer, Maine.

Coach Karcanes is married to the former Christine Tanguay of Windham, Maine.  They reside in Bangor with their son Tristan.
