Bruce earns medalist honors as men’s golf earns team title at Husson Invitational

BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University men's golf team turned in a dominant performance on its home course Saturday, as Husson's first team captured the team championship and sophomore Michael Bruce earned individual medalist honors at the Husson Invitational at Bangor Municipal Golf Course.

Husson finished the tournament at even-par 284, cruising to a 23-stroke victory over Southern Maine Community College and the University of Maine-Presque Isle, which tied for second at 23-over 307.

Bruce led the way with the only under-par round in the 66-player field, firing a 2-under 69 to claim medalist honors by two strokes.

Husson packed four golfers inside the top four positions on the individual leaderboard. Senior Juan Carlos Hernandez finished tied for second after carding an even-par 71, while sophomore Chase Farnsworth and senior Ty Dickson each shot 1-over 72 to finish tied for fourth.

Freshman Reese Smith rounded out the Husson 2 lineup with a 7-over 78, tying for 18th overall.

Husson's second team finished sixth in the 12-team field with a 33-over 317. Senior Jace Cook paced the group with a 4-over 75 to finish alone in 10th place.

Senior Ellis Spaulding followed with a 9-over 80 to tie for 26th, while sophomore Jacob Towne and junior Will Routhier each posted 10-over 81s to finish tied for 32nd. Freshman Isaac Beaulieu completed the Husson 1 lineup with a 19-over 90, tying for 57th.

The Eagles also had two golfers competing as individuals. Sophomore Anderson Clifford carded an 18-over 89 to tie for 55th and sophomore Logan Timberlake finished tied for 60th following a 21-over 92.

SMCC and UMPI shared runner-up honors behind Husson 2 at 307, while Maine Maritime Academy and the University of Maine at Augusta tied for fourth at 312. Husson 1 followed in sixth at 317, five strokes ahead of seventh-place Saint Joseph's College of Maine.

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday at the University of Maine at Farmington Invitational at the Waterville Country Club.
