Men’s swimming & diving earns hard-fought senior meet win over MMA

BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University men's swimming & diving team earned a hard-fought 150-142 win over Maine Maritime Academy at home on Saturday, while recognizing it's three senior swimmers and divers, Matt Steeves, Nathan Gilliam and Hunter Jackson prior to the meet. 
 
The Eagles 200-yard medley relay team of junior's Ryan Emerson, Brady Hand, Sam Peiser and Brayden Champlin clocked a 1:40.89 to win the event, while junior Alex Walsh hit the wall at 1:52.16 to win the 200-yard freestyle. 
 
Gilliam finished third in the 200-yard free with a 1:59.39 and Emerson won the 100-yard backstroke with a 56.96 and sophomore Jacob Brown finished fourth at 1:06.48. 
 
Hand and freshman Jake Perkins finished first and second, respectively in the 100-yard breaststroke, Hand won the event with a 1:04.62, while Perkins tallied a 1:05.79. 
 
Jackson and Fendl added to the Eagles point total in the 200-yard butterfly, Jackson won the event with a 2:13.28, while Fendl finished second with a 2:18.76. 
 
In the 50-yard freestyle, Champlin and Walsh finished second and third, respectively, followed by Peiser won posted a fifth-place performance. 
 
Steeves picked up valuable points for the Eagles in the one-meter, five-dive event, posting a winning score of 159.70. 
 
Champlin recorded a time of 50.03 in the 100-yard freestyle to finish second, while Fendl and freshman Bennett Walker finished fourth and fifth, respectively. 
 
In the 200-yard backstroke, Walsh picked up the win for the Eagles with a 2:04.96, while Emerson clocked a 2:07.54 to finish second and Brown posted a 2:25.00 to finish fourth. 
 
Hand dominated in the 200-yard breaststroke, posting a winning time of 2:23.74 ahead of the second-place time of 2:29.44, while Perkins added a third-place finish at 2:32.00. 
 
Gilliam added a second-place finish for Husson in the 500-yard freestyle and Jackson posted a fourth-place performance. 
 
In the 100-yard butterfly, the Eagles finished second, fourth and fifth as Hand posted a 57.17 to finish second and Peiser and Fendl added valuable points at fourth and fifth, respectively. 
 
Steeves scored a 204.20 in the one-meter, six-dive event to finish second heading into the final three events of the day. 
 
Saturday's meet came down to the final three events, after MMA claimed the top three spots in the 200-yard IM, both Gilliam and Perkins picked up three points for the Eagles, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, to give Husson a slight edge heading into the 200-yard freestyle relay. 
 
 Husson sealed the meet win in the relay as Emerson, Peiser, Walsh and Champlin clocked a 1:29.96, winning the event by almost 10 seconds and scoring 11 points, while Fendl, Jackson, Gilliam and Perkins claimed the final four points in the event by finishing third. 
 
In the 1650-yard freestyle, MMA pulled closed to the Eagles, but Walker and Brown scored five points with third and fourth-place finishes, respectively to help Husson record a hard-fought 150-142 win over the Mariners.
 
Husson will now take a brief break from competition before competing at the Little East Conference Championships on Feb. 13-16 at Boston Sports Institute in Wellesley, Mass. for the first time in program history.
