OLD TOWN, Maine – The Husson University women's tennis team took to the courts for its season opener on Monday afternoon and picked up a 7-2 non-conference victory over Thomas College in the roasting heat at Old Town High School.
The contest started with the doubles matches as for the first time in program history; all three matches went into a tiebreaker thanks to comebacks in each set by the Eagles. In the first doubles match, senior Molly Chicoine and sophomore Julia Barber came back from 6-5 to tie the match at seven, before winning the tiebreaker, 7-5. Juniors Hannah Duley and Olivia Chandler battled from 6-4 down to force a tiebreaker that the Terriers would win, 7-4. The third doubles set of senior Emily Doten and sophomore Joey Lynn Ramsdell battled back from 5-2 down to win the tiebreaker, 7-5.
With the Eagles leading 2-1 after the doubles; they cruised through the singles winning five of the six matches. #1 singles Doten and #2 singles Chicoine won their matches through the theme of tiebreakers. Doten lost the first set, 6-3, before winning the second set, 6-4, and the tiebreaker, 10-4. Chicoine won the first set, 6-1, before falling in set two, 6-3. She was able to recover from the second set and win the tiebreaker, 10-8. Barber flew with ease in the third singles match by winning via double bagel, 6-0, 6-0. Chandler won the fourth singles match, 6-4, 6-4, while Ramsdell won the fifth singles match, 6-0, 6-3. The Terriers won the sixth singles match as Duley was forced to withdraw from the match.
These two schools will rematch on Saturday in Waterville as they both open North Atlantic Conference action with the doubles beginning at noon.
