Box Score BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Husson University women's tennis team saw their ten match winning streak come to the end on Friday evening as Simmons University edged out the Eagles, 5-4, in their final tune-up before the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
Husson (10-1) began the day with a win in third doubles as freshman Sydney Loring and sophomore Hannah Duley earn an 8-2 victory over Simmons' (10-9) junior Sara Fucillo and sophomore Julia Perconti, but the Sharks first doubles tandem of senior Leah Bonis and senior Samantha Margolin evened the match with an 8-2 win over junior Molly Chicoine and freshman Julia Barber. With doubles all tied, sophomore Emily Lopez and freshman Annabelle Halloran were able to pull out the 8-6 victory over sophomore Sage Dubay and sophomore Olivia Chandler in second doubles.
In the singles portion of the match, Barber (6-3, 6-1) and Dubay (6-3, 6-1) gave Husson the brief 3-2 lead with a pair of two-set victories in third and fourth singles. The lead was short-lived as Perconti defeated sophomore Lexi Thompson in two sets, 7-5, 6-2, to tie up the overall match.
The Eagles re-gained the lead when Loring picked up a 6-3, 7-5 victory in sixth singles, but it was temporary. In second singles, despite dropping the first set, 6-3, Bonis responded with 6-0, 6-1, wins over junior Molly Chicoine to even the match at four. Halloran sealed the match for the Sharks with a two-set, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), tiebreak, win over junior Emily Doten in first singles.
The Eagles will now wait for selection Wednesday, May 3rd to see who they will play in the 2023 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis National Championship Tournament.
