BANGOR, Maine -Â Â Swimming against a perennially talented Norwich University squad, the Husson University men's swimming & diving team dropped a 179-118 decision on Sunday morning inside Webber Pool.
Norwich opened the meet by winning the 400-yard medley relay in pool record fashion of 3:44.05 which also saw the Husson relay team of sophomores
Alex Walsh and
Ryan Emerson, junior
Hunter Jackson and sophomore
Brady Hand narrowly surpassing the previous Webber Pool record time of 3:52.51 set by the team of R. Aceto, R. Ley, A, Mason and D. Juersi of the Westbrook Seals in July of 1988. The Eagles finished second in the race with a 3:52.88.
Junior
Nathan Gilliam picked up a fourth-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle after swimming a 11:18.23 before Walsh (1:54.10) and junior
Isaias Therio (1:58.53) took second and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle.
Emerson pulled out the victory in the 50-yard backstroke with a 26.30 and Jackson earned a fourth-place in the event after hitting the wall in 29.82.
Senior
Ben Carusi and sophomore
Jacob Brown finished fourth and fifth in the 50-yard breaststroke with respective times of 33.23 and 35.08.
In the 100-yard butterfly, Hand placed second with a time of 56.42 and sophomore
Sam Peiser finished fourth at 59.23.
Sophomore
Brayden Champlin grabbed a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle by swimming a 23.38. Champlin and Peiser had a 3-4 finish in the 100-yard freestyle with times of 51.95 and 52.71.
Emerson and Therio went 1-2 in the 100-yard backstroke after touching the wall in 57.71 and 1:00.79.
Hand (1:06.52), Carusi (1:14.43) and Brown (1:20.23) all finished in second, fifth and sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke before Walsh (5:12.66) and Jackson (5:33.25) earned a 2-3 finish in the 500-yard freestyle.Â
Champlin and Peiser earned Husson's second 1-2 finish of the meet in the 50-yard butterfly with times of 25.64 and 25.81. Terrio took sixth in the event with a 30.41.
In the diving events, graduate student
Spencer Bernat took home a second-place finish in the six-dive one-meter event and won the five-dive one-meter optionals with a school and pool record score of 168.20. The previous school and pool record score of 166.55 was held by Husson Sports Hall of Fame member Tim Smith '16 since January of 2014. In the six-dive one-meter event, Bernat's score of 231.25 qualified him for the 2024 Eastern College Athletic Conference Open Swimming & Diving Championship meet at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Matt Steeves placed third in the six-dive one-meter event and second in the five-dive one-meter optionals with scores of 191.45 and 158.30. Freshman
Nick Sawyer finished fourth in the six-dive one-meter event with 152.65 points.
Husson finished the day by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay with Hand, Champlin, Walsh and Emerson out touching the Norwich relay team of senior Tobias Macedo, senior Gabe Giovenco, junior Will Thompson and junior Michael Cowenhoven by .72 one hundredths of second. The Eagles won the event with a time of 1:31.23. The team of Peiser, Jackson, Therio and Brown took third (1:38.04) and Carusi, Bernat, Sawyer and Steeves finished fifth with a time of 1:46.63.
 The Eagles will make a return trip to Connecticut on Saturday, Nov. 11 when they travel to Willimantic to face the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University in a 11 a.m. dual meet.
