BANGOR, Maine - Graduate student Steven Johnston won all three events he swam in and set a school record in the 100-yard butterfly to lead the Husson University men's swimming & diving team to a 172-110 victory over visiting Eastern Connecticut State University this morning inside Webber Pool.
Husson won 11 events, while Eastern Connecticut State claimed the other five. The teams split the relay events.
Johnston won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.05 to eclipse the former mark of 55.30 set by Mark Davidson in 1973.The Hermon, Maine native also picked up victories in the 200-yard freestyle with a mark of 1:53.76 and the 100-yard freestyle with a 50.68.
Freshman Ryan Emerson was one of four Husson competitors to win a pair of events for the meet, including wins in the 100-yard backstroke (58.14) and the 50-yard freestyle (23.18) to go with a second-place showing in the 200-yard backstroke.
Freshman Alex Walsh won the 1000-yard freestyle by one minute over freshman Chris Salvatore with a time of 10:45.36 to lead to an one-two finish in the event by the Eagles. He showed his range by winning the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.03) and the 500-yard freestyle with a mark of 5:12.06. Graduate student Joe Vail cruised to a 50-plus hundredth of second victory in the 100-yard individual medley for Husson after turning in a time of 1:00.17 and later adding third-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard breaststroke. He also helped Husson win the opening the 200-yard medley relay event, swimming the breaststroke leg after Walsh lead off the race by swimming the backstroke, while Johnston and Emerson closed out the race in the butterfly and freestyle portions for a combined time of 1:43.62.
Sophomore Matt Steeves won the five-dive one-meter optionals with 126.20Â points and the six-dive round with a total of 208.85 points.
The Eagles return to the pool on Saturday, November 19 when they host Colby-Sawyer College and the University of Maine Club Swimming team for a double-dual meet.
